Inbreeding is a disgusting practice. My mother has been trying to "force" me to marry her sisters daughter for a while. She is a cute, smart and quite educated but I refused for obvious reasons: my cousin is like my sister. I can't marry her.

This disgusting practice needs to stop but unfortunately in the Islamic world tradition beats reason. I have been saying to her that its not ok but she doesn't really care.

And this is why modern scientific enterprise have developed and employ a myriad of techniques to address this issue. Like statistical inference, hypothesis testing (you assume the contrary and see if your results give null hypothesis) and Peer review, your peers examining your data to see if you did things correctly. Checking for biases. Then finally there is META-ANALYSIS , different independent studies on the same subject which either create a consensus of results to affirm the theory or show there is disparate understandings of the cause.

In the end, the level of bias a rigorous study has done is statistically so low, it's effectively 0. Not all research passes this test, but that's why this system is in place. to make us aware of dodgy research and claims. This isn't one of them.

How likely depends on many factors, but something done over and over, again and again, for generations and generations will make something likely to happen. It's a statistical law.
