  • why bollywood is bad for us

india is an ancient civilization. the mind of its people has evolved much more, has gone through much more thought and psychological evelution

we on the other hand are a simple people who have lived a simple and isolated existence in a remote country. our minds have not gone through the psychological evolution of an indian or a chinese mind

bollywood and its concept of romantic love is far more advanced for our understanding, especially of classic hindi movies before the era of internet and westernization of indian middle class. our minds cannot simply grasp that kind of romantic love, for us love is not associated with another human being, its more about a mulsim-sufi-inspired love which is basically a love of god... in our minds only god can be loved and not other human beings. we don't marry for love, love is a taboo in our culture because our minds simply cannot see anything in love as the indian mind sees

maybe if we all stopped trying to be a sophisticated indian mind and instead be a simple afghan mind, our lives would be much simpler... the afghan guy is not the indian movie hero... an indian movie hero cannot survive one day in afghan society, because unlike india we have not chosen slavery in order to live in peace... so its ok if British are ruling us but then lets sing songs and fall in love --- that sort of crap is not for the simple afghan mind

I respectfully disagree with you that muslims don't appreciate human love. The stories of Laila-Majnoon , Farhad-Shirin, Adam khan-Durkhanai, Heer-Ranja have been immortalized in muslim cultures. Large part of poetry in muslim cultures is dedicated to this human love. Infact there is a hadith which says to love God is to serve and love his creation, all creation animals, humans, nature etc.

No religion or culture can stop love, it is the most powerful force in the universe.

if you remove those rose colored glasses from your eyes and look carefully at those islamic love stories, you realize that they all end in tragedy and the protagonists go mad

in other words those are not love stories, those morality tales telling people that human love is not true love, because true love cannot lead to tragedy or madness

So are you saying that the "happily ever after" love is bs or the "tragic" love stories?

Because in real life, even among Afghans, both of those kinds of love exists. Not to say that the tragic ones should. I think some people go too far for what they think is love, and they commit suicide if they cant marry the one they love (such as in Romeo & Juliet). And some people get married without all of the "romantic" things that take place in Bollywood movies and they live happily ever after.

people who kill themselves because of romantic love are victims of their own narcissism.

Bollywood movies are not the reprcentation of an average Indian live, Indians have also arranged marriage, mostly they don't marry out of love, in this subject they are not so different than Afghans. The reason that bollywood movies are so popular in India and countries like Afghanistan, is becuase this kind of love most of the people will never see or expirience, its theire secret fantasy, a small escape of there daily harsh lives.

Not quite, they are tragic because lovers can't be united because of social pressures such as class difference, race etc. These tales show the trasendence of love beyond these pity man made differences. These tales are social critiques against unfair customs which have nothing to do with islam.

Islam is not against love marriages at all. In Islam a man and a woman both have the freedom to accept or reject a marriage proposal. It is true that the way muslim society functions, there is less interaction between males and females and that has its own advantages.

Besides these famous stories there is alot more literature which is about human love. For example listen to this song. The beauty of Sufi poetry is that it is ambigous, for example a verse reffering to beauty of the face can be applied to a female human or God. Since all beauty emanates from God, it doesn't really make that much of a difference.

If you look closer many of the poets for the Bollywood song lyrics are muslims themselves. Most famous poets of India are muslims, such as Bedil, Amir khousru, Ghalib etc.

Listen to this song by one of the most famous pashtun poets of the last century Ghani Khan. Here Ghani Khan says he will sacrifice paradise for a moment with the beloved. This song has to be taken literally and you can't say it is metaphorical because of the type of symbolism used.

what you fail to see is that any sort of attempt in glorification of any relationship and not to mention its participants is a boost to the ego -- so its the ego that is creating that illusion.

as i told you before, where there is ego there is no love

a poor peasant and his wife somewhere in Afghanistan who married in a traditional way are most likely to have true love because they don't know of it, they don't think of it and they certainly don't think of themselves as something better than others

if one really loves someone then one should never talk about it because if you talk about it then devil comes to know too and it sends its minions to destroy it --- back home we call this nazar kadan -- but what it actually means is if you become conscious and talk about something great you turn it into an egoistic thing and ego destroys everything because ego is an illusion

Not sure i undrestand what you mean by "not to mention its participants"?

Agreed, its a universal principal in all religions. All the prophets came to convey this messege.

Having an ego is not related to being rich or poor. They might think they are more pious than the rich people because they are poor and God is with the poor. Pride takes different shapes and forms. It is not as simple as that. We don't know if they think they are better than others, they might or they might not.

One who is madly in love will sing the praises of his beloved. Love is not an item to be acquired. True love can not be lost and since there is no ego in true love and its unselfish, it can't be destroyed. The problem is people sometimes take infatuation to be love.

the more one accepts that we don't know or cannot know anything about love the more one becomes worthy of love

there is no voodoo, or spirituality or religion or god or devil. romantic love is purely based on desire to procreate and the desire for lust -- not to mention the desire to fit in because people get married, that is what everyone is supposed to do

and that is the healthy way to approach romantic love because one cannot call it romantic lust... after all, it hurts someone far more if you tell them you don't find them attractive than telling them that you don't love them

If anything in bollywood is an indication of the actual indian culture then pashtu movies should be reflecting the exact same thing about us. and boy, how off is that??
for an individual who is aware of what he or she is talking about, love's definition does not come from society so whether it has been evolved or not, it does not freaking matter. the concept of romantic love is a very very abstract and subjective matter.
vomitface aka killzai/shiva tends to overgeneralize alot. i don't think you know what you are talking about most of the time yourself. you are all over the place

"To burn always with this hard gemlike flame, to maintain this ecstasy, is success in life."

romantic love needs money -- how could that be spiritual love?

i much prefer if the woman who loves will love me because of my flaws rather than for some spiritual reason.
