in the west and all westernized nations, the men feel emasculated. they know they have lost their virility and their edge. so in order to feel like a man they all have begun to accept popular culture, movies, as sort of mythology to make themselves believe they're something other than what they're. all these blood sports on TV are also part of this. all weak individuals (men and women) watching some guys beating each other and taking sides can feel powerful themselves.Originally posted by Kushan Prince View PostWatched it the day it came out, pretty good movie.

and with all of this comes the geeky white guys fixation on samurai warriors of japan. for some reason they feel by reading some of the books, such as hakagaure and the book of five rings, and watching some samurai films they have some samurai spirit in them. once again by trying to imitate what they consider as strong individuals they feel they can overcome their own sense of weakness. so this movie with Neo playing a samurai or the previous one with tom are specifically targeted to this audience. also included are the geeky girls who're into japanese culture because unlike western culture the japanese idea of beauty is fantastical and does not have some tall thin blond as their archetype.
but then what is this thing about geeky weak guys and samurai? i mean for one the idea of samurai through movies is incorrect, secondly the samurai in the movies are almost always from a period of Japanese history where samurai had become civil servants and there was no longer any war.
but basically there is nothing into to this other than simply the movies acting as a form of mythology or ideology.
the real samurai were anything but the cookie cutter types in the movies. the real samurai would everyday wake up and start the day with preparing himself on how he will die the proper way. in other words he was a dead man, and what do you do with a dead man - who's alive and trying to kill you? isn't a living dead person the most horrifying being? THAT was what samurai were all about.
i have a samurai in my avatar, but that is mostly a parody, because i'm a parody of a samurai.

Johnny english reborn.By blood, we are immersed in love of you.
The youth lose their heads for your sake.
I come to you and my heart finds rest.
Away from you, grief clings to my heart like a snake.
I forget the throne of Delhi
when I remember the mountain tops of my Afghan land.
If I must choose between the world and you,
I shall not hesitate to claim your barren deserts as my own.
