A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

I think positive correlation between academic achievement and single-sex or mix education has not been conclusively established yet. Things seem to be dependent more on individual ability and social background than the particular mode of education. Below is an interesting study.

      Overall Assessment

While gender composition is one of the most obvious features of a school, and has attracted a lot of research, it is not necessarily an important factor in a school’s success, however judged. Indeed the evidence seems to suggest otherwise. The main determinants of a schools’ performance are the ability and social background of the pupils. It is only after these have been taken into account that school factors such as leadership and teacher expertise come into play. The gender mix is only one of the school factors and its effects, if any, are usually not strong enough to be detected by the
methods of educational research. Whether to mix or separate the sexes in education is an issue which arouses strong feelings, but on which there is little conclusive evidence.

Herein lies the paradox: people ‘know’ one or the other is better but cannot prove it. Ultimately, the shape of any educational system running on parental preferences will be settled by the market. The independent sector has to respond directly to parental choices and here single-sex education is contracting. The government is attempting to create a market in the maintained sector also, and it remains to be seen whether this
will lead to a change in the proportion of single-sex schools (currently about 12 per cent of the total). So far there has been no general clamour from parents for more, though there is a demand from particular parents, cultures and faiths. Most parents ...
seem to be looking for a good school regardless of its gender mix.

My experiences say separate them during the High School years. I attended both High schools in an urban and suburban settings. The latter is worser than the former, in terms of sexuality and drugs.
That is just disrespectful. That says that you don't trust your child and that you have zero faith in your parenting skills. You are insecure and paranoid. You will raise children who have been escorted to places all their lives ad lack the confidence to be out there in their own. Thy get married, drive their spouses crazy, have disasters for children and live miserably ever after.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

Meyebe you went to some ghetto school. And the drug and sex was more due to the problems at home, that being whith boys and girls in one school.
I went to mixed school and I have never had a classmate who used drugs, and becuase we also had many muslim children I also heard rarely about boys or girls having sex....

Most of the sex problems is due to backround. You can't expect from atheist teenagers who are 17 or 18 to not have sex, becuase in there culture having sex before marriage is normal, its even ecourage. Most of the Afghans and other muslim I know were still virgin at high school.
So by mixing boys and girls would be not that of a big deal. And by the way the whole hormons excuse is so overrated, you don't become an sexanimal ones you reach puberty -_-.

I think this is the most comprehensive review of the research on SS and CE so far. The following conclusion from the review is interesting.
            General Trends
A few trends are apparent across all outcomes. The preponderance of studies in areas such as academic accomplishment (both concurrent and long term) and adaptation or socioemotional development (both concurrent and long term) yields results ranging from supporting SS schooling to no differences between SS and CE schooling. A limited number of studies throughout the review provide evidence favoring CE schooling. It is more common to
come across studies that report no differences between SS and CE schooling than to find outcomes with support for the superiority of CE schooling. In terms of outcomes that may be of most interest to the primary stakeholders (students and their parents), such as academic achievement, self-concept, and long-term indicators of success, there is a degree of support for
SS schooling. The one outcome variable that might be of most concern to parents of high school females is eating disorders; however, the single study suggesting greater problems in SS schools must be replicated in the United States with a larger, more diverse population of subjects. Special
attention must be given to individual differences in this regard because conversely, Caspi’s work suggests that for some girls, delinquency is a greater concern in CE schools.

Absolutely. Parents should explain it to kids instead and put trust in them. This will make them more responsible.

But thinking of the people in afghanistan what is your opinion about that

Do you think in afghanistan its best to have mixed education or segregated?

Because in western countries that we live in everyone including me think that mixed is better and preffered by parents too

But i still agre with you.. There is an all boys university here and it seems for males its better when they are separate... But then again due to segregation the population of the homosexual males has increased in the university.. I dont have an article or anything to back me up but i have been noticing a trend...
Pisho; I've worked as a teacher in primary and at high-school/adult ed level and as an advisor/consultant in several countries.

Across the world - education - moreso than a key service like healthcare - is viewed as a means of making a political point because schools are seen as factories for social manufacturing.

From a social point of view I understand the arguments for mixed teaching/learning. I think however we also need to consider that there is a growing body of research that points to inequity within systems that are supposed to promote equal and comprehensive education. Remember this is about increasing educational opportunity far all.

In Afghanistan I think coed works at some institutes at higher education level but to suggest that to the rural folk you would see a decline in attendance of girls at school.

School is meant to be a place to learn, and that includes how the opposite sex acts or behaves in an educational environment. A person with good intentions would know how to behave.
if it was never the answer then the prophet wouldnt have point out to seperate male's from female's.

aisha ra wouldnt have to hide her face and talk to them behind heejab(wall...etc) the sahaba were asking her about islamic studies NOT some Medicine or other studies...etc why there was an ayaa about it in quran?

yes you are right about they woud have myspace....etc but that doesnt mean we should leave it to them! there are the same people in the west do the same things while they study togther!! you didnt solve nothing!!

they should be sepbareted and they shoul be teached the islamic morals and whats right and whats wrong! if they still gona do it then there is the amr bel almuaroof wa nahi a'an almunkar who would solve the problem!
