when i went to sabah, in borneo, malaysia, to go snorkelling on one of the worlds best dive sites, i had the most amazing time.
the reef itself was pristine and the area around palau sipidan had been fully protected for about 20 years but had also been safe because not many fishermen went there, due to the danger of pirates. from the phillipines, i think.
when i went into the water, off the boat, i was delighted to encounter a large turtle, and i came to the surface to announce to the others that i had seen a turtle. the dive master just smiled and i soon found that there were turtle all over the reef. the divers said that as they went deeper, the turtles were larger.
the reef was so clean and the water seemed as clear as above the water. i had to remind myself to come up for air. it was easy to dive and look closely and forget one was underwater, lol.
wonderful viewing of sea creatures, eels, fish, sharks, turtles and reef environment.
it was my first experience of being in the water and sharks swimming by me, about 2 metres away. i willed myself to stay calm so's not to attract their attention but reef sharks are not known as aggressive. since then i have encountered many sharks whilst snorkelling in tropical waters. swimming with the fishes and being able to observe the incredible marine world, is one of my favourite activities.
sabah itself, had many other wonderful sights and things to experience. lovely country and people.
