  • Question about my Major and Job opportunities

Salaam everyone, I am back, and just wanted to ask the knowledgeable members of the forum..

My major is in Environmental Science and Policy. Would I be able to find jobs easily in Afghanistan related to this field? I was told by someone that I couldn't. I hope people here would help me and shed some light.

    Thanks a lot!

hmm I have an Environmental Science degree but I have a degree in the actual SCIENCE part, Specializing in Atmospheric Physics/Climatology, but usually Policy degrees are environmental studies oriented. Let me say this; you have job opportunities but in Government Administration, maybe in Mines and Natural Resources Management. You may need to do a lot ...and I mean a LOT of chaploosi, because often those types of jobs in Afghanistan are run by nepotistic people. If you have a more science oriented degreess, you can always work for NGO's; scientific research. I'm not sure if major universities have strong research bearing institutions yet?

Right now I am doing my doctorate, I just got my M.S. in Applied Math; I changed because I HATE field work. LOL

You might. Engineering is the most in demand. Work hard and choose a field you enjoy.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

See, the thing is that I would be getting a Bachelor's of Science. My major is individualized. I took a variety of courses. Physics, Chemistry, Calculus 1 and 2, Sustainable energy courses, Enviro science/geology courses/Landform Analysis, etc. as well as courses in policy such as Environmental Economics and Nonprofit management, international development, etc.

Do you think I should change my major's title or something to better reflect my coursework? Do you have any suggestions? As I pointed out, I am an individualized major.

By the way, I actually absolutely love fieldwork and also laboratory work.

I just really hope there was someone that can better guide me.

I was actually really interested in that but it's not offered where I go to school. I could transfer somewhere else though. It would just take me longer to graduate. I only have 2 more semesters left.

That's not necessary if you have all those courses under your belt. You may even get work as a Geologist or Mineral Engineering; since you have knowledge of structural geology; since mineral extraction is now a big business in Afghanistan.

Your degree sounds much more well rounded than mine. I have little experience in Policy; and while I did take a Renewable Energy course; it was flaky and not helpful at all in giving any insghts beyond what I actually learned in Introduction to Environmental Science.

Yeah I know. I am more interested in working in the science aspect of the field so I just hope that the "policy" part of my degree does not mislead employers. I actually am taking very high level renewable energy courses this coming year but I feel like it may not be reflected in my degree title lol.

well your course load should be fine, the fact you have policy oriented courses may actually give you advantages, because you can do consulting. I just say send your resume'. The only thing which may limit you is the availability of such jobs, but I think if you've done all those courses, you'll be very competitive.

That's relieving to hear. You mean I should include my coursework on my resume ? Is that also an option? I could also send them a transcript too I guess.. I mean I have done well in all of my classes except for English Composition where I got a C+ because the teacher hated me.

                    Hey,

I actually googled it and many suggest it as a good idea to list Relevant coursework as a section on my resume.

                    Thanks a lot RevolutionThroughReason!

If you have any other suggestions, I look forward to hearing them.

employers will never nit pick at a couple of C's ....especially if it's in a course which isn't apart of your field of concentration; with that said that doesn't mean you should do poorly, but one C+ will not hurt you.

speaking of C+, good supplemental courses to take after you graduate, GIS courses, Arcview/ArcGis, Python if you can and C++, if you take C++ and ArcGIS courses, you'll be wanted everywhere, and I do mean everywhere.

                        Get a minor in CSE/CS.

Yeah thanks for those suggestions RevolutionThroughReason and AdminKhan but unfortunately I loathe computer work. I am more of a fieldwork and laboratory person. That's the only problem.

you may dislike computer work, but even for field work you're going to need basic programming skills especially when it comes to modeling. Fluvial deformation and erosion are important topics for someone with your background and will be important in studying the hydrocycle of the Hindu Kush.
