Oh really? They seem to be the ones making the biggest song and dance about it along with your annexed state that's rapidly turning into Persia-stan. Not surprised about the kurds, since they're heavily influenced by iran by way of religion and tradition.

Care to show me someone in Timbuktu celebrating this wholesale iranian event? Nahhhh...Didn't think so.

oh yeah, deffo. That's why I'm dishing some out here. Gotta spread the mustard...

Serious talk - When i watch some of the afghan channels i swear it's as though I've put on TehranTV. I can't have imagined so much iranian influence in such less time. Those American 'reconstruction' dollars have definately gone into propping a persianized state by bringing in so many exiles.

Kabul might as well be called Herat.

Not to mention Karzai travelling to Iran and Tajikistan with Rakhmon and Ahmadinejad for "Persian summits".

            Timbaktu is in Africa
Thats because Persians are the biggest group 80-90 million people so ofcourse they will come across as being the representatives of Nouruz.

I don't care if people celebrate it or not. Its their choice and nobody is forcing anyone to celebrate. The rituals of Nouruz have been modified so its not anti Islamic. Instead of the Zoroastrian Gathas people read Quran or other Islamic poetry such as Hafiz, Rahman Baba and so on. I rather people celebrate Hijri Shamsi calendar rather than Georgian Chrisitian Calendar. The Calendar of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is Islamic and appropriate. Its a 2 day holiday at the start of New Year in Afghanistan and you can spend it the way you want. But people usually go picnics and have a nice time. Its just an excuse for social gathering. Nobody gives two hoots about where it came from in reality.

Ofcourse Afghanistan will be moving towards Persia-stan as you put since Pashtuns are too busy trying to be Arabs, Pakistanis and Parsiban. The success of pashto depends on pashtuns working for it and making it a language of Arts culture and academia. Until then Pashtuns on both sides are prone to be persianized and urdufied.

no princess fluff, what I THINK is that either no one in your family has seen a calendar in their life to recognize the existence of such a day or that you ( or someone else) in your bloodline was born to a repressive ekhwani who deprived you of the pleasure of having the freedom to celebrate something simple such as joy for seasons changing. Anything else you would like my thoughts on??

You seem to forget that modern Farsi was created in what is now northern Afghanistan. ?The biggest poets after the Islamic invasion of Iran and Affghanistan were from Northern Afghanistan (Jami, Rabia, Rumi, Ghaznavi etc) and Tajikistan (Rudaki etc). What you said would be like saying pashtuns of Afghanistan are so pashtunified that we might as well call jalalabad Pekhawar. You see how absurd that sounds? Farsi speakers of Afghanistan and Iran and Tajikistan share the same language and culture and its natural that they will influence each other. Its not Pashtuns conern how cosy they get as its not farsiwan's concern how cosy pashtuns get from Lar aw Bar.

Having said that we must be vigilant of Iranian intentions in Afghanistan (spreading shiaism, persianess on pashtuns etc) but Mirwais Hotak (ra) already showed them what will come their way if they try anything dodgy.

My thoughts can be of whatever nature as I wish for them to be. I don't see why I should paint them with rainbows before presenting them to you.

That you don't celebrate for whatever reason doesn't concern me. I think it is for the reasons I mentioned. You asked me what I thought, I told you.

I was listening to a PODcast from the Global Rickshaw and the guest speaker (I think he was a Khattak) explained that Pashtuns are unique in using the expression 'Akhtar' to denote Eid. The rest of the Muslim world uses either Eid or a variation of the word.

He explained that 'Akhtar' probably goes back to the time that Pashtuns were not Muslim and was likely to have lifted from a Spring Festival known as 'Yakh Tair' (Winter's Passing). That would coincide with NowRoz. It's probably worth digging out references to verify/dispute this claim.

wow, never heard this before but sounds very interesting. Would love some more input from others.

The Turks in Turkey call Eid "Bayrami" so its not just pashtuns who have their own word for it. Their might be more.

Some other Muslim ethnicities also have alternative names for Eid. Most Turks and Bosniaks use the term "Bayram" or "Bajram" and Malays say "Hari Raya" though these, like "Akhtar" can alse be used for other holidays.
Similarly, many Iranians and probably Afghan Dari-speakers also call Nauroz "Eid". An example of this would be the general holiday greeting "Eidetan mobarak!", which can also cover Nauroz.
