I grew up with Matthew Dresdens galore; you'd be surprised. The small town that I was raised in, in the south, was predominantly baptist with us being pretty much the only outsider family. We had little contact with any Afghans, Pakistanis, or anything of the sort. The closest Mosque was about an hour away.Originally posted by ScimitarXEdge View PostBarakzaiAbdali
those stories bring a tear to my eye; but I'm sure Matt Dresden's goal is just to have a chance to get laid in Afghanistan so he can brag and high five all his buddies about his conquest. And flaunt about how he "liberated" women from self respect and decency by nailing a woman of the Taliban. Fetish gratifying conquest to serve the Imperial ego
Intially there was a lot of preaching by these folks as I started to come of age... this forced me to read, comprehend, and understand the New and Old Testament to the point that I could question them on complexities and similarities I saw to Islam. For instance, the Prophet Daniel prayed 3 times a day towards Jerusalem... and I pointed out to them that the early Muslims praid first, towards Jerusalem and three times a day. I noted to them the fasting practices of the Prophets etc.
Because I showed them a degree of respect, but would not yield ideologically, and even argued with their pastors (I even attended their Baptist Church on Sunday to see what it was about), they grew to like me and became somewhat protective of our family. I learned to shoot my 30-30 from these guys and they even came to my wedding.
I refused to lie to them and tell them that there were two different types of Muslims and that holy war was simply "strugging in the soul"... rather I emphasized to them their view on what they called the War of Northern Aggression was not all that different from how various folks they are fighting view the American presence in the Saudi peninsula: i.e. people dont like outsiders telling them what to do, how to live, and on their land.
We left indellible marks on eachother and one of these boys (one of the few that ended up going to college) ended up asking for a copy of the Quran. I had never actually preached to them... he asked for it post 9/11 saying he wanted to understand what all the fuss was about as we had known eachother our whole lives. He was astounded by the verses on Zul Qarnain, where Zul Qarnain came to a people that were basically tribesmen that wore little clothing and he simply bypassed them and left them alone:
"Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against the sun...He left them) as they were: We completely understood what was before him."
He said that this level of understanding, compassion, and restraint in a Paragon King, being described in a text from the middle of the Arabian peninsula was astounding.
After reading it, this young marine told me that because of his station in life, because of who he was going to marry (Ill give you a hint, it was the daughter of a politician of the south who stoked controversy about a Mosque in the south), because of his general culture he could never convert... but he said that he truly believed that it was the word of God and that if Muhammad (S) bought it then he could not but accept that the man had a link to the Divine. He went on to say that the rest of us had pretty much shamed what he called the basis for a great Islamic Constitution.
We continue to be fast friends and I actually attended that wedding as he had attended mine. I joked with him that his in laws had to be careful because news might spread that they had an Afghan Muslim at their wedding...
He's a Ron Paul supporter now..."2 crackheads don't become any better or stronger by sharing the same crack pipe." - Greatest PF quote

if you are in afghanistan just contact the locals as they will help you.
a pashtun never keeps enmity in his heart for a person when he turns to him for forgiveness or acceptance. that is the law of pashtuns. they have very big hearts. witness it for yourself.

Mubarak sha, for beng the one 1% true Pashtun in here. Your reward is being raised and educated in USA, and dorming in-campus filled with non-family members, because thats what true Pashtun women do. Oh wait, you already do that.
