^ Yeah they are so sweet......the lady always forgets my name :/ but she says she remembers it being exotic. She is so sweet, and her husband always tells me stories of his childhood.

Yes, people often ask does it reek in the nursing home. Yeah it mostly smells like bedsheets, medicine, and oxygen tanks. But it gets fun and rewarding.....especially on Fridays when they hold activities for 2 hours.

activities in slow motion. the old aboriginal people used to like to be taken out to the river. i took them camping and 2 of them wanted to go back to the home. it was quite funny as they are bush people but they wanted their comfortable beds.

What goes around comes around. In our culture parents work their life off for their kids, in their culture parents work their life off for their retirement funds.

I do feel sorry for them as the majority are unhappy, depressed, lonely and it's mostly because in many places the staff are very unpleasant. Many old people deteriorate faster the moment they step into a residential home.

I must add though, some (very few in number) old people that need round the clock care are better off in residential homes if their families aren't always around. It can be dangerous for some old people to live alone even if it's only a few hours a day. Residential homes have other people they can interact with plus entertainment and health care. Those people who need the daily interacting can benefit from the packages, and having families visit regularly keeps them in good spirit.

Personally, as long as I'm alive, I would inshallah never ever let my parents nor parents-in-law live in a residential home.

My two cents, sorry if it's repetitive... I'll browse through later.

White people aren't the only ones who do it anymore. It's horrible for these people though..they are usually very ill treated. Some of these people who are terminally ill, their families don't stay by their sides. I know it's hard to deal with someone who is super sick, but at the same time to leave them seems harsh too. Allahu Alam.

I absolutely hate the saying "Be nice to your kids, they'll choose your nursing home." I did go to an assisted living facility with my friend while she was visiting her grand father. It was so sad to see, and to think that people actually pay (in some instances) to have their loved-ones there. God bless the women and men that work at these places. I can't even imagine how emotionally and physically demanding it must be.

where i worked with the aboriginals, it was easy as we were all outdoors on the verandahs most of the day. not smelly and no one sitting watching tv. mostly i was a carer but they employed me to help them do paintings and get them active. that was fun because they really enjoyed it. took them fishing a few times.
they were given really good meals too. i was very impressed with how this christian group were running these places.

Not only that, nursing homes/assisted living are very expensive.

Some elderly people don't have any relatives to take care of them and are unable to do so themselves.

In any civilized society a nursing home is needed for such people. The other barbaric alternative would be to leave them alone at home to die.

Many such people also make friends at such place. A great example is the one provided by Laila herself above.

If those people were left alone at home, nobody would've visited them. In the nursing home, there are people who can take care of them and they can socialize with other human beings which is a great health benefit.
