Can we talk in a civil manner

As is obvious on this forum we just cant discuss anything in a civil manner. Lets try to do so, Let me start a thread on that and lets see if we can discuss that in a civil manner. Remember its a fight of ideas, not of persons. So lets see what we can learn from that.

I will start first.

I think the reason that we cant discuss anything in a civil manner is the fact that people are punished for their ideas and believes. Once you allow that to happen, all communication becomes a tussle. for civility to be maintained we should understand a humans right to free ideas and free speech.

Another shortcomming is the lack of understanding of what is private and what is public. Ideas and positions can be public and private. Pashtoons consider everything private.

I call this the problem of the big nose. Remember the famous quote : ""The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins." - Oliver Wendell Holmes

Pashtoon noses, unlike other humans are wrapped around the whole world. In such a case, every thing is personal and thus an allowance for swinging ones fist. A cartoon in netherland, and our nose gets offended, swing the fist. An unrelated women is laughing with a man, somehow that is a direct blow to our nose, hence a retaliatory swing is mandated. I can go on and on. like your input.

because we have gharait, and we always want to defend our honer, religion, culture and langauge.
we can't just sit and watch people make fun of us and our culture etc.

You are a gem sangar (not being sarcastic, I do honor your straight forward crystal clear, sharply edged, doctrine, no sissying at all) , but why do you reject it. What makes you so sure.

I dont do cities is not a good argument, very weak if you ask me. Do you do suburbs, countryside or prefer the wide open spaces. What is it that you are rejecting, are you saying a Kochay cannot be civilized. Is this objection a visceral rejection from your gut or a clash with religion. Please elaborate.

That is the whole point, forget about me, focus on the topic, discuss the idea, I may stink or smell of perfumes, how does that affect the topic, remember say something about civility and what is it in your mind and what do you think about what I wrote, not about me.

As I said, I think you and I were being civil enough... its not like we cursed eachothers mothers or anything. A part of the process is learning from one another, but a part of it is also having fun while doing so. However, no problem, I can maintain whatever tone you prefer in our back and forth.

i know...all these well structured paragraphs with capitalized letters are making me dizzy. kana, onetime some loser tried to hack my hotmail account. he sent so many silly emails to my friends. too bad they knew it wasn't me because everything was capitalized and i hate capitals.

I like a little marchakay myself, but that's not the point here, what do you think keeps us from civility in public discourse. What do you think of my comments regarding them. Rather than focusing on 'my delusions of religious piety', focus on just 'delusions of religious piety', you know what I mean.

well, for starters baygham, you've catagorised these verbal exchanges as a 'fight of ideas'.
we all think we know what it is all about and we can scream at each other till the cows come home, but very rarely will one change anothers views, in this fashion.
the other tactic that is frequently used by, the learned on here, is reference to anothers lack of education, intelligence, sanity, capacity to be logical, rational and scientific.
but what they forget is, that some people have been living the life and gaining from experience rather than having a good memory and learning from books. who is going to listen to another when their first retort is how dumb you are??? that just creates friction, if one is sucked into that little game. and there you have it kapow, chests out, mental fists up and away we go..... to nothing ,just loads of words going back and forth.
