For an Indian, that wont be very surprising TK. There are more Urdu speakers in India than in Pakistan, almost twice the number. And many of these are Hindus. My grandfather could read and write Urdu and he was a Sikh. He was associated with translating land records from Urdu to English.

In India it really depends more on the area you're from rather than the religion. People from Awadh (area around Lucknow, Kanpur etc) speak Urdu regardless of their religion.

You're quite right KhalsaJee - the "irony" I mention points to a key part of the Pakistan "construct" which would have their citizens believe that somehow Urdu is/was the exclusive domain of Muslims.

That's the interesting "twist", because you can't always make those rigid associations between language spoken, ethnicity and religion followed. (Sorry to veer off folks).

what do they mean when the woman says " ranja ranja mujko pukaro mujey heer na bolavey koi.."?
i thought it's because she means that i am in love with him and not him with me but then i have seen heer ranja and heer and ranja's love was not one sided..

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

I assume you know the Heer-Ranjha story. The lines that you have posted above are from Baba Waris Shah's couplet, a Sufi poet. Read more about him here - Waris Shah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Originally they are in Punjabi and the full text goes like this- "Ranjha Ranjha kardi ni main aapey Ranjha hoyi; Ranjha Ranjha aakho mainu, Heer na aakho koi".

Roughly translated it means that Heer was so immersed in her love for Ranjha that she felt herself to be one with Ranjha and gradually felt herself to be Ranjha himself. Hence she asks her friends/family to address her as Ranjha rather than Heer.

Waris Shah often equated the Heer-Ranjha's love for each other as his love for God.

^ thanks for explaining that. it makes sense to me now..i know very little about waris shah to be honest. i haven't found much on him in the net and haven't searched for him otherwise either..
there is this other poem by rabindernat tagore (?) which speaks about the evil with in one..something along the lines of 'i searched the world for evil and found more of it in with in myself than out there...'
i read it somewhere a very long time ago. i just cant seem to find it.

DZJ, I can relate that to some of the themes in Tagore's works but I cant remember a poem like that. Here's what I found for you instead - All poems of the poet: Rabindranath Tagore - works
Browse through all his poems as much as you want.

And there's a movie called Waris Shah. Gurdas Mann acted in it. I am sure you can find info about the movie and translations of his works on the web somewhere.
