A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Janana, i really want to start wearing a hijab now. But i am trying to convince myself that once i wear it, there is no going back. I just wish i had more confidence in myself to actually place it on and keep it as my attire. I am trying to do it slowly, so i get myself used to it.

MashAllah that you are trying with hijab. I was the same way where I tested the waters before wearing it full-time, though I wish I hadn't stalled so long. It's a beautiful feeling to wear hijab and people do treat me differently, with more dignity and respect. It really comes down to wearing it with conviction for the sake of pleasing Allah. Are you not confident because you're worried about your relationship with family/friends/colleagues will change? Having to explain yourself? The way you look in hijab?

Its not so much about my relationship with my surrounding peers, it has more to do with my internal conflict. Such as, okay, i have to understand that hijab is a committment. One day i wear it in public basically means i have observed it for my own good. Which wouldnt make sense if i decided to ignore it a few days later....we call those people "part-time hijabis" they are not sure what it really means to wear it and only wear it when they feel like it. My normal attire consists of: long sleeved top, neck is covered, long that my back is covered, loose jeans and pants, and a cardigan over anything else that i know should be covered. But in the back of my mind, i feel okay, something is missing here. I personally think i should take it slowly, but like you mentioned, not to stall it for long. maybe i can start off by leaving a scarf around my neck so i know how it feels to have one on me all the time....i always ask advice from young women who just started wearing hijab. usually they say its best to start off slowly. Reality is, hijab is not just a physical attire, its the whole picture, how you lead your life, your attitude, and impression of yourself.

Fully agreed. If you are going to wear hijab, you wear it all the time. So you want to try wearing it, but don’t want to wear in public yet for fear of being labeled a part-time hijabi?

Why not wear it around the house on your days off? That way when you are ready to go out in public with it, you already know what to expect. Try it with different sized hijabs, different materials, and tie it different ways to get the feel of it.

Yes you’re right, hijab is a physical and social aspect as well. From my personal perspective Laila, I want to be a mother and I want my daughter to serve Allah. How can I expect to raise her as a practicing Muslim who also wears hijab if I don’t wear it properly myself? The reason why I think I stalled too long, is that when I finally did start wearing it I realized how overrated the situation was. Wearing hijab is really not a big deal at all. It is not a restriction on me; I am still a fully participating member of society with it on. It is part of me and has made my iman stronger.
