My short list just to start off:

I prefer My Name is Khan of the two. There is absolutely nothing negative about the way Muslims are portrayed in the movie. While Khuda ke Liye (whoa, what a name!) also tries to serve that purpose, it goes wrong in many places, and gets us (yes, once again Pakhtuns) into the bad name game! Produced by his wife, Gauri Khan, I think (My Name is Khan) it was a magnificent production, second to none.

Re: Movies

"khuda k liye" protrayed the reality about pashtuns way of life, lets face ourselves to the harsh facts.
shoib mansoor is genius and he did honesty with his work.

Re: Movies

I've got V for Vendetta on DVD, but I actually prefer The Matrix by the Wachowski Bros.

I love cool soundtracks, cinematography, and stories - other contemporary(ish) films for me:

The Matrix (Australia/US, 1999)
28 Days Later (Britain, 2002)
Dark City (US, 1999)

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (China/Taiwan/US, 2000) is such a peaceful film. Anyone see ??????? ????? Bachaye Asmaan (Iran, 1997) or ???? Pinjar (India, 2003)?

I love classic Laurel and Hardy and the stuff they show on TCM. Not really a Bollywood boffin, but I can name all the classic tunes thanks to exposure to my parent's staple diet of B&W Indian cinema.

Re: Movies

^^ I saw Taken, was alright.

Laurel & Hardy.....don't forget Charlie Chaplin! We used to watch those with my grandfather

V for Vendetta is an amazing film! And LOTR are just classic. 8-)

Everyone seems to be talking about My Name Is Khan, so I may check that one out, even if it is Shahrukh in the movie...
Khuda Kay Liye was a good film, I liked that one. Guess we were shown stereotypically, but it was an interesting film and not bad for Pak.

Other random ones that I can think of right now which are worth watching, are Shawshank Redemption, Blood Diamond and Dark Night. Also wanna see Alice In Wonder Land, if anyone's seen that?

Blood Diamonds is brilliant and I went to see Alice in Wonderland 3D a couple of weeks ago - it's typically Tim Burton, very off beat with his usual ensemble of Johnny Depp, Helen Bonham-Carter etc.

For real, yeah? Or is that a hurried remake of the SRK film?

I've seen Da Gaz Au Da Maidan (Pashto), but it was one of those Badar Munir films that was of such poor quality, it was ALMOST colour.

Also a few questions:

Why is it that the characters in Panjabee films always half-face the camera to shout at people behind them?

Why do they wear those fake stick-on moustaches?

And what's it with overweight women and headbands and heavy breathing?

Somebody once described a Panjabee film in which a robot comes to life and develops a concience. At first when he comes to life his arms and legs are stiff and he hobbles in those robotic movements. Later, some folk bother this robot and his concience makes him turn against humanity. He then grabs an AK47 and goes on a death spree and kills all people in his wake. Sounds like the original I Robot or a Frankenstein alternative.

Obviously, the robot was man in a silver foil suit, with silver-sprayed hair and tinman face paint. His creator - a mad scientist, who would have been the first mad scientist to create a Panjabee robot, gives the robot the name, Bazooka.

Re: Movies

'Osama' is a really good movie, and that girl is beautiful, but the movie made me cry

I think 'Alice in Wonderland' will give me nightmares.
I saw 'Valentines Day' on Valentines Day with my friend, and it was a good movie
I loved the theme to 'Avatar'

Afghan movies are just plain depressing

Re: Movies

OOoohh, nice thread! And nice movies!

My so-far favorites would be:

~ A Beautiful Mind (a true story)
~ ******* out of Carolina (this is like the ONLY book I've ever read that does 100% justice to the movie! Haunting, destructive, and heartrending. Brilliant.)
~ Crash (racism)
~ Enough (domestic abuse, threats, intimidation, women's issues)
~ The Hours (omgggggg!!! THIS is the ONLY movie I have been able to watch more than once A very important one as well.)
~ Mona Lisa's Smile (impressive, influential)
~ Slumdog Millionaire (too devastating -- but very important and beautiful -- for me to comment on)
