Actually I was not surprised either since wife beating has been mentioned in Sura Nisa and a number of Islamic scholars agree on it..In sum, it is only encouraged in cases when she prefers to watch Star Plus drama than serving food to her master...hence, she fits the definition of "disobedient"wife who deserves to be "disciplined" (as the interpretation goes).Some western Islamic scholars do try to differ by manipulating the interpretation of the verse but the attempt seems to be more for face-saving reason than educating the ignorant clergy.
