Yes - only those Muslims whose beliefs are similar, if not exactly the same, as those of the Wahabis or other extremist conservative Muslims, admire him. The reason that minority Muslim groups don't like him is that he has issued some extremely unjust, cruel, and false statements against them and their beliefs.
Also, I have yet to find an intelligent Muslim (or non-Muslim) who actually likes him.

As you say, he is spreading false information about peoples of other religions, and that's really unfair. That's also a sign of a lack of decency and etiquette of scholarship.
