One of our seniors members once told me that these people are so defensive about Islam because they live in the West - surrounded by foreigners and always facing criticism. So they take refuge in their religious identity because they feel that it is being threatened. They're in defensive and reactionary mode. For them, if they lose Islam, it would mean that they've lost everything and that they've been defeated by their hosts and their inferior culture of immorality and what not...
