Credere - sources are always carefully chosen. What usually happens is that we start off with an inner belief and find a way to back that up. It is no more intellectual than that.
I have very close family in Swat too - last year my wife's family was caught up in the war, so I don't share your perspective. Our sister-in-law was lost, my grandfather's aged sister was separated from her family and my first cousin was forced out of her home and walked to Jalazoi with her children. My maternal uncle refused to leave his home because army searches meant that household goods were being looted. When he stayed back, he was harassed by the army (he has always had a beard). Solution? He gave the army some goats that they took up into the hills so that they could "halal" them (Islamic fashion) and roast them on a nightly basis. This was a Pakistan army operation.
You might respond by saying "Well these things happen in a war." That would make me pause, and then sigh.
