  • Pashto only sub-Forum

I would like to petition for a Pashto only sub-Forum of the Language part of this forum. Having a section of the forum reserved exclusively for writing in Pashto script would be a great aid to students practicing their Pashto reading and writing skills. Of course the section would also be open to users who are already fluent in reading and writing Pashto and just want to converse in Pashto.

Although the section in principle should be Pashto only, I recommend a minimum of English be allowed in order to clear up any confusion and/or difficulties in understanding that might arise. I also recommend that only Pashto script be used and not transliteration. First of all because I believe it is important to promote the original Pashto script and second because transliteration can be confusing to some (myself included, not least because I have a much harder time looking up transliterated words). I understand if people might feel otherwise though, and will not argue the point.

In essence, the sub-Forum would be a playground for Pashto students trying out their writing skills. It would not be limited to any subjects but open to everything from mindless chatter to scientific and political discussions.

These are just my preliminary thoughts, if anybody has any other suggestions be sure to share them.

    I agree with this suggestion.

              Ah nice, good to hear.

My dad and his friend were going to set up their own pashto classes as well a few years ago...don't know what happened though, think other commitments got in the way.

I still have some of the pashto text books left over here for kids/beginners.
Maybe i'll photocopy them sometime and post it in the language section.

You should definitely do that if you get the time, Haris. The more Pashto material we can get online the better.

Not sure if you agree with my suggestion.
I think we should avoid English transliteration of Pashto instead of proper script. English transliteration isn't perfect, especially for beginners. Different Pashto letters are transliterated using the same English letters: آ،ع are written using "aa", ح، خ، ښ are written as "kh", ږ، غ are written as "gh", ه is transcribed as "a" or "e" etc..
On the other hand there are words in Pashto, written in the same way but spelled in different way, like: تلل (tlel) - to go, and تلل (talel) - to weigh.
All such details are important for conjugation (tlel and talel are inflected in different way) and declension.
So it would be good to write a text in Pashto along with English transliteration (and maybe with English translation?).

Another thing - we would need here someone with fluent Pashto to correct us when necessary.

Those examples you mention Yasmeenaah are part of the reason why I think transliteration is confusing. Also, every person has his own way of transliterating words. Of course there are also differences in spelling when using Pashto script, but it is still much more consistant than transliteration.

Anyway, to start with I suggest we let people write however they wish. Let us see how it pans out...

^ The sub-Forum has already been created: http://www.pashtunforums.com/1601%3B...3B-1740%3B-60/

A moderator should move Yasmeenaah's post there.
