Pashtuns are a nation of roughly 40-50 million and they live primarily in Afghanistan and Pashtunkhwa (Khyber Pashtunkhwa, FATA, Northern Balochistan, Mianwali/attock). We are basically divided into tribes, clans, etc and are identified primarily by our language, and ethnic code Pashtunwali (way of the pashtun).
Pashtuns are not a race, but speak an Eastern Iranian language, Pashto. The major ancestry of Pashtuns most probably was Hepthalite, Scythian (where our language comes from) and Kushan. Of course there are other groups of people who have assimilated into the Pashtun fold (i.e. turks, indo-aryans, arabs, greeks, etc).
