  • Hi Pals

    Greetings Pashtunforums,

My name is Joey. I'm an American interested in learning Pashto as one of my spare hobbies. I recently discovered that my paternal great-great grandfather was a Pashtun from Kandahar who married my great-great grandmother, originally from Wales. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could be part Pashtun! I am fascinated and as I mentioned previously, I am also very interested in getting better in touch with that portion of my heritage, however small it may be.

I have even learned some Pashto:

De Pashtun forum wara gharyo ta dair tawda salamona aw naike heela wrande kawom. Pa reshtya chy dair khushala ym chy stasy sara sha, arzeshtnaka arreky ijad krem.

    Pa dranasht,

    Joey G.

    Hi Joe,
Welcome. Where do you reside now? Also, how did you find out that your great-grear grandfather was a Pashtun, and that too from Qandahar?
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Manana kawom. I reside with my 4 children and wife in Chicago. How I made the discovery was two summers ago after my grandmother had passed away, we were clearing the home out and found letters and photos in the attic. My great-great grandfather was a very well-educated man. He worked as a lawyer in the British colony of Mali back in the day.

I already have problems at work and home. I am about to get laid-off from my job and quite frankly, I don't need kids scoffing at me on a forum.
