Safi or sapaye in pure Pashto, live in pakistan and Afghanistan,
In Pk many live amongst the Momands of momand agency in tribal area(FATA)
In AF they live mainly in konarr, and many dispersed as far as Herat,
Many come from koh-e-nejrab, in kapisa,
Are historically a dissident tribe that have opposed former kings,
The richest family in AF is safi, the owners of safi airways,
Their unity has made them a powerful tribe

I know a few safi's - some of my best friends

Because many safi live in momand agency, they are called safi Momands, which can lead to misconception that safi are momand,

Safi are from Gloria khel, and some sources say same of Momands, hence confusion.

Me too, as a momand, I have difficulty in finding root of this supposed connection.

Some one recently suggested Momands are descendents of a son of tokhi! I don't know. Most of my masher are dead hence I have no chance of ascertaining this. Most material on Internet is from British raj time or from the US naval research institute(!!!) - biased in my books.

One thing I do know is momand are sarbanrri Pashtun, I remember mashar saying this.

I know people in Mohmand Agency from both tribes and they say they're closely related but not the same tribe though they are Sarbani. Mohmands and Safis also live together in Kunar.

I also agree with much of foreign research being biased.
