  • greetings.

i have come here in an attempt to learn from you all about pashtun culture, history and future, and what your views are about the current state of affairs in the region of nwfp/fata in particular, especially if any of you have recently been there and seen the situation for yourself.

i'm not fond on giving my life story away over the internet, but my quest is personal. i wish to trace my grandfather's steps starting in peshawar, which is difficult, knowing next to nothing about him as he died when i was a baby, while my father was still young. i must say the traits and physique from that side of my family are remarkably strong, though i was born and raised a westerner. i have just recently began learning pashto (is ANY language a breeze?), and the urge to discover gets stronger by the day.

i am at present of no religion though i have had my 'calling', if you know what i mean.

so i will keep reading and learning, and when i feel the urge to ask questions or chip in, i will do so.

    manana,
    fk.

    Greetings,
Welcome aboard. Good luck with your quest.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
