  • Am I Pashtun?

Here is my horrible first post, because I'm sure its a question that has been asked ad-nasuem.

    Am I Pashtun?

My family says we are, but we have been in UP India (and after partition Pakistan) for many generations. There are family records tracing every male member of the family back to Afghanistan. My father's family claims we are Mohmand and my mothers family claims they are Yousefzai.

No one in my parents generation speaks Pashtu. My fathers grandparents were the last people in my family that spoke Pashtu or Dari. Since his grandparents spoke it to each other, my father can speak some Dari.

There are people in my distant family (who are also recorded in the said document that traces us back to Afghanistan) who look more Indian than my immediate family.

There are some claims in our family history which I find to be contradictory. While my family claims to be Mohmand, I am also told that at some-point our ancestors resided in Jalabad. But is that an area with many Mohmand?

So would we be considered Pastun? Pashtuns that I have discussed this with give different answers. Naturally, since I don't want to seem like I'm posing, I rarely ask this question to Pashtuns in person. Mostly, what I hear is that we would not be considered Pashtun.

Also, let me add why I am asking this. I've grown up being told I am a Pashtun. However, I realize that most Pashtuns would not regard me as such. I "look" Pashtun to most people, but I'm not even sure what that means. I'm light skinned, tall, and non-Indian looking. But I've seen Pashtuns that are dark, short and Indian looking. So I don't even know if this means anything.

    Thoughts? (No Trolling)

    Yes.

My mother is also from a similar UP Rohilla Pashtun background. Most of her family are lighter than many Pashtuns and have green eyes but they speak rural Hindi dialects instead of Pashto.

Yeah, I'm a Marxist. Not trolling. I genuinely am. Deal with it.

My question was genuine. More answers would be appreciated.

What would the genetic test be looking for? I've considered this in the past, but if you think about it the markers for Pashtuns are actually shared by a large population group. To my (limited) knowledge, there are no Pasthun DNA markers.

Thanks for your feedback. I've been confused by this often.

In all honesty, I've met very few Indians or Mohajirs in Pakistan that claim Pashtun origin that *don't* know what tribe they are from. Unless you are counting the numerous people with the last name "Khan", most of whom don't even seriously claim to being Pashtun.

However, here is another question, isn't being Pashtun also about culture as well? Language in particular?

Since you hail from a major Pukhtun tribe, I would certainly view you as Pashtun. Just try your best to live Pashto, and learn Pashto.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Pashtuns invaded india for hundreds of years, many Pashtuns move to India through the various Pashtun dynasties that conquered over. The description of your fathers grandparents and the language etc is giving a clear indication that your infact one of us.

Was that referring to me? I never claimed that anyone from my family is from Dehli.
