    سلام غليکم

    SiiNii زما نوم

I am a US Soldier who desires to learn Pashto. This is my first deployment to Afghanistan, and my first deployment in a non-combat role where my duties keep me inside of a FOB. I haven't seen much of the country itself, except for a brief helicopter ride, I hope to change this and get out into the field where I can meet and speak with Pashtuns, find out the ground truth about what is happening.

The biggest thing I noticed in a previous deployment in Iraq as an Infantryman was that our limited ability to communicate with the Iraqis severely limited our effectiveness. When fighting a counter insurgency how can we understand the needs of the local populace without being able to sit down and talk to them over an extended period of time? How can we gain their respect if we don't understand their culture and continuously offend their honor? How can we promise them security if we don't know when and where the threats are coming from? Our patrols can hardly gather intel if the only channel of communication is a single interpreter per platoon / company, who often has a rudimentary command of English.

In the long run my objective is to find an effective way for military personnel to learn Pashto. I felt that if just ten percent of our men who are out in Pashtun areas knew the language we could fight the war with fewer casualties on both sides and end the chaos much sooner.

Thank you all for any help you can provide.

I don't know if aimal khan is on this forum but if he is I want to give special thanks to him for his basic Pashto thread from this forum :

    Hey,
So are you presently in Afghanistan? Your location says Kandahar, what part of Kandahar province?
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

My main purpose is to learn Pashto, then to find a way to bridge the gap between soldiers and Pashtuns. Currently I'm what is called a fobbit or remf. My mission does not involve patrols or day to day interactions with Pashtuns or any Afghanis, and I have just begun to study the history of this war, so it isn't likely I'll be able to answer many of your questions.

welcome to pf, blah blah blah.
long story short, people here in pf don't really like american soldiers nor appericiate their desire of wanting to learn the language/history or religion. i wondered as to why you people are so keen on joining a pashtun forum...i get it, it's pretty obvious and similar as to why i am here. you are simply bored. which is understanding. just do yourselves a favor and don't introduce yourselves as soldiers. it would save people like me lots of headache. you see, if we bash you, we are similar to some other douchebags around here with whome we don't want to be associated with and if we don't then it's because we share same values as you and are probably in love with you, blah blah blah.
yeah, you have stepped on a landmine. good luck.
                enjoy your stay, okay?

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

it should be more apreciated the presence of these soldiers on pashtun forum than in afghanistan.

welcome to Pf but i dont think you are welcome in AFG.

maybe you should think like this "hey maybe these people dont want us to be invading our country" how difficult is that? why learn the whole language to have people tell you to get out of their country?
