  • Need your help, my friends!

As salamun aleykum, my dear friends. I am from Azerbaijan and I am going to Kabul in the midst of June and will be working as consultant for 3 weeks. A lot of people are trying to discourage me from going to Afghanistan since it is dangerous for the foreigner.

I just wanted to get your advise on how to keep myself secure in Kabul, where not to go, what not to do and etc. I would be so grateful to you.

    With best regards,

    Azeri

    Welcome to the forum.

    A consultant for what?

              Salam Azeri Jaan,

You will be welcomed in Afghanistan since you are helping the Afghan people. Since Kabul is full of different ethnic groups, it's easy for you to blend in. If you however, mingle with foreign forces, you might be in trouble with some Afghans. If your focus is to help the people with accounting, the Afghan people will be delighted, and they will embrace you with open arms. Prepare to taste delicious food, and get ready for unparalleled hospitality. Just try to stay away from foreign bases, and embassies. Blend in with the local Afghans. I think you will have a blast. I, on behalf of the local Afghans, would like to thank you for educating my people.

Oh, and welcome to PashtunForums. :-)

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

I am belonging to oriental culture, my friend. And I was brought up by my parents in such a way that the guest in my house is always welcomed. I will never say to Afghan in Azerbaijan (and there are many of them believe me), what afghan has to do in my country. Never. Because I respect your countrymen, respect your culture and traditions. I am not the part of the invasion and I am not the occupant, my friend graveyardofempire.

In that case you shouldn't really face many problems since you are a Muslim and the fact you are Azeri, you probably look similar to alot of Afghans.

I'm sure you will know how to conduct yourself so you would most likely be welcomed.

I cannot comment on the security situation there since last time I was there was over 5 years ago (I might visit myself this Summer).

Thank you so much, dear Admin Khan, for your warm words and hospitality! Oh, I have nothing to do with foreign forces, believe me. A friend of mine who has been to Kabul, is praising a lot your food, especially Kabuli Pulo and Sabzi Pulo I would be so grateful if you help me with choosing the hotel. Is Serena Hotel, safe?

                      Huge hugs!

Trust me, you will love it in Afghanistan. The people are extremely friendly, and peace-loving. As far as your hotel is concerned, Serena and Continental hotel are generally considered 'top tier' and I personally wouldn't recommend them because it's full of foreigners, and you just never know what might happen. You might not have malicious intentions, but you don't know who lives in the compound. I personally would recommend a local hotel in the city, something not too posh. That way, you are safe and far from the evil eye. There are many local hotels, you can't miss them. Living in an elite hotel equates to mingling with the Afghan elite, and that's not generally a good thing considering their track record. Don't be too concerned, you will kill your brain cells. Dress like a local, and have a blast. I am confident that you will do fine. Don't forget to take pictures and share them with us here! Once again, I thank you for your time and dedication. :-)

Thank you so much, Admin Khan, for such a useful information. I am sorry, I might be annoying, when you say "dress like a local" you mean afghan national dress? Is it possible to buy it in the ordinary market?
