Hello Brothers and Sisters. This is my first time joining a Pashtun/Pakhtun Forum. My name is Muhammad Moiz Khan. I tend to put Yusufzai after Khan as that is my tribe but it is not an official Document name. I'm 21 years old and was born in Pakistan, Karachi. I came in to Canada when i was only 6. I dont speak Pashtu. I'm definitely a Pakhtun.

My Grandfather Served in the Army for WW2 which was India at that time and was ruled by British I believe. His Dad, my Great Grandfather Came from SWAT Valley and moved to Karachi. I'm our family's 2nd generation that was born in Karachi. My grandfather Can speak Pashtu pretty good and my father did not learn for some reason but can speak like a NEWB!. I dont speak at all, maybe 5 words out of all of Pashtu's words. I look Afghan, Italian, Persian, Spanish type of a guy, That is what people think when they first meet me.

I didn't learn a lot about my moms side because I found her side boring and didn't chill with her side much. They are Khans but they dont look Pakhtuns.

I'm here to Get Advice and Try to learn as much as i can over here. I have Afghan friends here who are from Kandahar and Some Afghans who moved to Peshawar. I was afraid to learn from them because I learned that they have different Dialects and Accent from Pakistan Pakhtuns. As they Say SHA and we say KHA. I would like to get a clear answer on this.

I would also like to clear that I like saying PATHAN. I grew up in Canada and Karachi in a Urdu Speaking family. Pathan is a word not made by Pakistanis but brought by Arabic word "BATAN" and brought in by British people who couldn't conquer Afghanistan. People need to learn that Pakistanis didn't not create that word.

Some people say that i cant be Pathan because i cant speak Pashtu. But I definitely look like one. My Afghans friends say I'm because of the traits i have and the way I act. Revenge, Honour, Respect, Protection (of whatever and whomever). The way i do things which i wont put here because its getting too long.

Sorry it had to get this long, but i would love for you all do say something about what i wrote. And guide me to success with learning Pashtu and teaching me more about the ways and the History. Take Care All

    Assalam-Alaikum.

Welcome aboard brother. Being a Pashtun is not all about speaking Pashto, there is much more to it. You my friend, are a proud Pashtun and we welcome you with open arms. Since you said you have Kandahari friends, try to ask them to converse with you in Pashto. Nonetheless, we are here for your assistance. InshAllah, you will learn about your culture here.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

As far as learning Pashto is concerned, you will be up and running in no time. Hell, worst case scenario if you need someone to "speak" Pashto with, I can give you my digits and speak to you over the phone. Have no worries, we have a lot of Pashto learning material in our Pashto forum. Lurk around and ask any questions, our experts will be more than glad to assist you.

Also, you are a Pashtun/Pukhtun/Afghan, not a Pathan or whatever new names that are being coined around.

          walakum salam,
pakhair raghlay, welcome. The KHa and the SHa has nothing to do with Pakistan or afghanistan, both sides of the durand line has both pashto dialects. It has more to do more with the reationship of the tribes. I am from afghanistan and we speak the KHa dialect just like Yusephzai. Also if you are not aware there are tribes that live on both sides of the Durand line and speak the same dialect. The line is imaginary, pashtuns dont recognize it.

Welcome to the forum Phuongymy. I like the introduction.

It depends which 'stuff' you're referring to and your needs, as some threads are detailed and some for beginners. If you are familiar with the Arabic alphabet, learning how to write and read in Pakhto shouldn't be too difficult as our alphabet has a few more additions. Other than that, at this stage, on an online space, I think you should work around what you want to learn rather than how a language is learnt. That, in your case, would be more motivating. If you need any assistance, be sure to ask.

Well, i heard from this guy who learned Chinese that learn a word a day. And if you learn 360 words in a year, you are basically speaking most of the regular words used daily. If that is the case with Pashtu, then i just wanted to learn from basic. A word a day. From Hello (which i know), how are you (which i know) to fine, good, why, good, nice weather, etc.. Small daily words like that. So, if you can point me to where to begin with this.

I can read Arabic, i know the alphabets of Urdu but cant read as sentences. Im pretty sure i can read the Alphabets of Pashtu but wont be able to read it as sentence. What im looking for is Pashtu to English, i.e, Im fine (sangai not in pashtu alphabets). If you guys get what i mean. Point me to the right direction

walaikum salam. welcome to the forum.

Pashto is not an easy language to learn, majority of non Pashtoons don't even attempt it... but it will be easy for your inshaAllah because Pashto is in your blood .
