For a number of reasons. First of all, he was a revivalist. He wanted to revive Islam. And the people of false beleifs and political leaders do not want Islam to be revived in its original form. Because they fear that hteir position might be compromized.

And the Jews, Christians and mushrikeen always spread lies against the people of tawheed.

This is why all great personalities in Islam are always accused by the shayateen.

As is our habit of inflating our accomplishments, the trend continues. Honestly guys, do any of you even know what he preached,
why he ran away from afghanistan
why go to the court of Ottomans,
why he was easy on scripture and vastly took liberty with strict interpretation that is fashionable today under the salafi sponsorship,
why he enjoyed relationships with women of all faiths in europe where he "saw no muslims but saw Islam".

His true greatness was that he saw muslims equal to or superior to their masters. Probably was in awe of western progress but not in awe of western sense of superiority that came with power in the 19th century.

Today he would be called a murtad by the followers of mullah omar. But hey lets milk it while we can, great muslim-great afghan.

Iranians have always claimed everything to be Iranian.

This was such a big problem that long time ago, there was a comedian who use to write poetry under the name "Gozook" (farter). When he was asked why he choose this stupid name. He said he did so so no Iranian or Afghan would go around claiming him for themselves.
