A critical evaluation of the Ahmed Shah Baba's reign proves that he did three mistakes due to which the Pashtun/Afghan Durrani empire could only survive for a comparative shorter time:

1) Lack of institutionalisation: Had he setup a system for the appoinmtment of the new head of the state ,the much bloodshed which between the descendents could have been avoided.The mutual rivaly and struggle for the throne followed by bloodshet not only weakened the empire but also distracted the attention of the power elite to power struggle instead of peace and stability and hence progress and prosperity.

2) The second mistake was the importance given to Persian instead of Pashto language.Pashto ,had it been officalised and given the same importance as persian would have given the academic,intellectual and institionbuilding support to the empire in addition to enrichment of the Pashto literature and poetry.This would have opened new vistas of cultural and literary activities with a postive effect on Afghan society.

3) The third mistake was indifference towards science and technology.Having inherited the thousand year old culture and wisdom,coupled with the Indo-iranian interaction on one side and a gateway to the central asia on the other,much could have been done to contribute to science and technology and hence transform Afghan society into a more creative culture in terms of science and technology.
