  • Chitralis selling their girls

    Those who live in Pakistan know that Chitralis sell their girls to the men from other parts of Pakistan. Their females are famous for beauty. I have come across cases in which few men from my district bought young girls from Chitral, its no rumour. There was a shocking report few years back that 74% of marriages of Chitrali girls are with people from other districts, specially in Punjab.

    Now i have stumbled across an 1850's report about Chitral ,then known as Kashkar, by a British surveyor. It says ;

    "The females of Kash-kar are remarkable for their beauty, which is said to surpass that of the Siah-posh women, who are so much celebrated for their good looks. A great many people are yearly sold into slavery ; and a boy or a girl can, generally, be purchased for one hundred rupees. The more comely of the females fetch high prices, varying from five hundred to one thousand rupees. Two or three hundred slaves are sent annually into Turkestan , by the Darwan Pass of Badakhshan, and constitute one of the chief exports from the country".

    (It was not bride price, they were selling their children into slavery)

      Pashtun men are also involved in buying Chitrali girls, they are very cheap. But it seems Punjab is number one as buyers, all news reports mention Punjab in particular.

      Getting a bride from Chitral not easy for outsiders now - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

      I have read comments from Punjabis in forums that buying Chitrali girls is very popular trend in Punjab. They drool over Kalasha girls all the time and do not get tire in posting their pictures, and when they learn that a Chitrali girls of the same district can be bought for around thirty thousand rupees...........Chitralis are no superior race, it appears historically they have been dalagan, shamelessly selling their own children into slave markets of Turkestan in old times

      Its bad effect of tourism that this bad historical practice has been revived . Slavery no longer exists but still girls can be sold in the name of marriage. People from all over Pakistan tour Chitral and some how come to know that girls can be bought from there. Many of these Chitrali girls sold dont even understand Urdu, Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi or other languages of their husbands......they are just used for.....

          Reminds me of Circassians, who were also renowned for their beauty and many of them supposedly sold their daughters into slavery as they fetched a high price. I suspect the degree to which this happened, both among the Circassians and Chitralis, was probably exaggerated by outsiders, especially Westerners who love to focus on the bad aspects of other cultures to make themselves feel superior.

          There are Pashtuns areas that are known for supposedly selling their daughters into marriage too. Any people with a reputation for good looks is going to have outsiders interested in their women, and since no population is completely honorable there will be some daughter-selling (in Muslim countries this takes place in the form of marriage, in the West it's prostitution/pornography) taking place, unless local governments strictly ban it.

              Chitralis looks better. In terms of looks they are superior. Hence why Ranjiits prefer lightskinned Chitrali women over women of their own race.

                  One does not become a beghairat for admitting the ills of his society, but one does become delusional for denying them.

                  You want to to act like all Pashtuns are perfect models of honor and dignity, never pimping their family for their own benefit? Go ahead and bury your head in the sand, and pretend there aren't Pashtuns who get their daughters/wives to sing even when they don't want to. Pretend Pashtuns don't give their women in marriage to their enemies to solve disputes. Pretend many Pashtuns don't drop every notion of honor as soon as they leave the heartland. Things won't get better, but as long as you can continue pretending everything's peachy, who cares about reform, right?

                  Alhamdulillah Pashtuns do generally fare a lot better than other people in preserving their culture, and resisting the dishonorable aspects of modern global culture, because of our strong cultural emphasis on honor, dignity, and our adherence to Islam. But to pretend that there are no shameless Pashtuns is just straight up delusional. Our leaders are perhaps most emblematic of that fact. While their shamelessness may not be reflected in their selling of their daughters, some among them have sold their land, people, and souls to the Sikhs, British, Russians, Americans, and anyone else willing to pay.

                    .
                    Calm your tits, he is not talking about you but about Chitralis.

                    I am getting the impression that you live in abroad. "Pashtuns" forcing their daughters/wives to sing songs?. Where it happens, on Mars?

                    Yes there are individual cases of beghairati and besharmi in every society but if vast majority of people of a region are involved in exporting their daughters to far flung areas then they are indeed dalagan and beghairat. Reports suggest that many of these girls also end up in brothels of Punjab and i suspected they will also be trafficked to Arab countries. If Parent has received cash from some nobody from Karachi and they hand over their daughter to him , never bothering to check on her again......then its "selling" , no bond between two families is established.

                      Chitralis used to sell their daughters in old times especially the ruler(Mitar) of Chitral to generate revenue for the state and buy weapons. That was a very shameful act. Now the Chitralis are not selling their daughters but are getting them married in the lowlands for their better future especially by the poor people. The money which bride family extort from the groom is the bride price which Pashtoons and Punjabis mistake as if they have bought the girl and own it. This money is spent on marriage ceremony and buying dowry for the girl. Not all Chitralis get their daughters outside Chitral. Most of them oppose it and take it as an insult marrying their daughters to non Chitralis.

                      Chitrali girls who marry outside are Sunni Muslims. Ismailis and Kalash don't marry outside Chitral. I have read somewhere that 2800 Chitral women are married outside Chitral but I cant gurantee its authenticity. Majority of the women are married to Pashtoons and then Punjabis and Hindkhowans. Interesting thing is Chitrali women are married to Pashtoons, Punjabis, Tajiks, Gilgitis, Gujjars, Hindkhowans, Muhajirs of Karachi, Arabs etc but the men don't prefer marrying other ethnicities. Marrying non Chitralis is common in Lower Chitral. In upper Chitral the people are not that liberal there are marriages but very few.

                      Marrying outside Chitral was very common 10 to 15 years back and majority of the girls in my village (not my family) were married outside Chitral. The reason for marrying outside Chitral are many
                      * Better future and prosperous life as depicted in Paiistani dramas and think everyone in Pakistan is a Khan and Chudry.
                      * Poverty
                      * Unable to finding mates in Chitral
                      * More women than men in Chitral
                      * Polygamy is abhorred

                      But now the situation has changed. Womem no more want marrying outside Chitral as they have come to know that lowlands does not necessarily mean better future. Many of the girls were abused and some were even killed. Some reached brothels. The culture is very different so is the language and most girls only understand only Chitrali. A large number of girls after getting bad impression of their husbands and got divorsed in courts if they have the power. A few years back there were more than 50 cases of Khula (womem seeking divorce) pending in Chitral courts and most of them were married outside Chitral.
                      Still marrying outside Chitral continues but at much slower rate and marrying in Chitral is not that easy as it used to be.

                        A sick attack on Chitralis. Chitralis are very nice people peaceful, industrious, and educated with a high literacy in both women and men compared to tribal savages.

                          With the exception of the person commenting above me, everyone in here seems pretty amused by the idea. Are we discussing the unfairness of the situation or providing information on where to buy women from?
                          It is in vain to think of a wilderness distance from the heart.

                            Yea very educated and civilized of them to be sell their daughters. A Chitrali Organization itself admits that only 10% of marriages with non-locals were genuine. Chitrali women trafficked, forced into prostitution - The Express Tribune

                              All the Chitralis are not the same. Majority of the people see it with contempt and are against it. It's the people of Lower Chitral who marry off their daughters to everyone who comes in their way. In the upper Chitral the tribal concept is still strong and sometimes its difficult to marry outside your tribe even with a Chitrali. For the majority those who get their girls married to non Chitralis are Dalagan and Beghairat nothing alse. These kind of prople dont represent us and are a blot on our face. For me they are not even Chitrali. There is also an organization to prevent outside marriages ANJUMAN-E-DAWAT-WA-AZEEMAT CHITRAL.
