  • questions on Pashtun - Rajput relations in India & Pakistan

hi all, sorry for asking questions frequently but i have no other option as i am working with a small team of historians and writers who's publishing a book called "Islamic period of India : Conquest and Resistance".

my questions are listed below, as this forum have many pashtun historians i hope i will get some good Answers.

    1) according to Samandri, some Rajputs who Converted to Islam started calling them Pashtuns and they evn got accepted by original Pashtuns of India. can you guys tell me why real pashtuns accepted these rajput converts ?

    2) how and why these converted Rajputs claimed pashtun tribe names such as khattaks and yusufzai ?

    3) how original pashtun settlers saw these rajputs who claimed Ancestory from these Tribes ?

    4) how many pashtun tribes from KPK and punjab accepted into mainstream pashtun Race ?

    5) some rajput clans such as jadoon and sudhai from panjab and Mirpur(KPK hills) claims Pashtun origins while we have jadoon Rajputs in Rajasthan and sudhai Hindus in Punjab and kashmir.

6)jadoons are generally accepted as pure hindko speaking pashtuns while sudhai in modern time are also marrying heavily into pashtun population. any specific reason to accept these clans ?

    7) how can you identify fake pashtuns ?

please give answer of each question separately so it's easier for me to understand. and please contribute even if you know only 1 or 2 answers.

    thank you.

Many Pashtun historians on PF? There are no historians on this forum.

I dont remember saying that. Where and in what context i said that?. Generally speaking we dont know what some of our people did this and that in India. Its hard to tell apart Pashtun from Pathan (Indianized or wannabe) in history of India. And our people either dont know about Rajputs or have very vague idea about them. In medieval time our people were going to India for trade purposes where they used to come across Rajputs or within Afghanistan/Pakhtunkhwa they had some encounters and interactions with Rajput soldiers and officers of Mughals. A learned man like Khushal Khattak would knew about Rajputs but for a layman Rajputs were probably just Hindwan (Hindus).

From some sources it appears that Pashtun settlers in India did adopt some Indians. E.g Daud Khan, a runaway slave from Pakhtunkhwa, adopted a Jat boy and named him Ali Muhammad Khan who later became leader of Rohillas. He is mentioned to be a patron of Pashto which means he was raised as a Pashtun by Daud Khan. There were also Indian "chelas" of Rohillas. Internet says some Rajputs started calling themselves Pathans after conversion to Islam but it doesnt make any sense. They must be converts from low castes of Hinduism like Dalits, and Shudras .

      2) how and why these converted Rajputs claimed pashtun tribe names such as khattaks and yusufzai ?
Never heard of this. What are your sources?

      3) how original pashtun settlers saw these rajputs who claimed Ancestory from these Tribes ?
Indian historians and scholars from Rohilkhand would be in better position to answer your question.

      4) how many pashtun tribes from KPK and punjab accepted into mainstream pashtun Race ?
      ??

      5) some rajput clans such as jadoon and sudhai from panjab and Mirpur(KPK hills) claims Pashtun origins while we have jadoon Rajputs in Rajasthan and sudhai Hindus in Punjab and kashmir.
Who told you that Jadoons/Gadoons are Rajputs?. Jadoons/Gadoons are Ghurghasti Pashtuns and are kin of Kakars, Shinwaris, Safis, Pannis etc. The "Jadauns" of Rajasthan have nothing to do with Jadoons/Gadoons. Its Dr.Bellew who theorized that all Pashtun tribes are actually Rajputs and according to Raverty he did that to justify British India's expansion towards Afghanistan (that Pashtuns are Indics and belong to British India).

Some of the Sudhans of Kashmir claim to be Saddozai but they actually have nothing to do with Saddozais , they are wannabes.

6)jadoons are generally accepted as pure hindko speaking pashtuns while sudhai in modern time are also marrying heavily into pashtun population. any specific reason to accept these clans ?
Jadoons in their proper dwelling (Gadoon area of Swabi) are Pashto speakers while those who migrated from Swabi and settled in Abbotabad in 18th century, adopted the Hindko language of the indigenous. Who told you that Sudhans in modern times are "heavily" marrying into Pashtun population? it must be some stupid claim from a Sudhan on web who must have said that to convince you that Sudhans have some thing to do with Pashtuns.

      7) how can you identify fake pashtuns ?
Any one whose mother tongue is not Pashto , is not a Pashtun to begin with.

I wonder whar has this question any thing to do with your book ""Islamic period of India : Conquest and Resistance" ?

There are no Rajputs in Pakhtunkhwa and Afghanistan , and the Khatris in Pakhtunkhwa are mostly Sikhs. If you are talking about Indianized "Pathan" caste of India and Punjab, then they are not 'us'.......they are not Pashtuns and whatever they do, are not representative of Pashtuns of Pakhtunkhwa/Afghanistan.
