  • Gabari Tajiks

I think many Tajiks themselves wont know that Swat , Bajaur, Kunar, Nangarhar and Laghman were once ruled and inhabited by a clan of Tajiks known as Gabari. They styled themselves "Sultans" and were ruling Swat before its colonization by Yousafzais in 1510 AD (the last Gabari ruler of Swat was Sultan Owais). The Sultan Haider Ali of Bajaur who was defeated by Babur and his fort was destroyed as mentioned in Baburnama, was Gabari. They were Zoroastrians before Islam, thats why they are called Gabari. They are said to have migrated to Swat, Bajaur etc during the reign of Sultan Shahabuddin Ghori and the first seat of their mamlikat was Kunar under Sultan Pakhl (after whom Pakhl area is named), later they shifted their capital to Manglur in Swat. In 1340 , one of the Swati, Shah Mir, from ruling clan of Gabar , migrated to Kashmir and established first Muslim dynasty there. In 1399 they lost Kunar, Laghman and Kabul to Amir Timur.....in late 15th and early 16th century, they lost all of their possessions to Afghan/Pashtun tribes.

Their dependents in Swat and Ashnagar were also Tajiks, styled as "Dihgaan".....in Swat the Dihqan clans were Mamiali and Mitravi while in Ashnagar (Hashtnagar, Charsadda), they belonged to Shalmani clan who were originally from Shalman area of Kurram agency. Rest of Peshawar valley and part of Bajaur were inhabited by Dilazak Afghans since Mahmud Ghaznavi times. All the Mughal and Pashtun sources mention that Sultans of Swat claimed to be descendants of Sikander Zolqarnain (Cyrus the great)
