Khalqi Pashtuns invited Russians but Pashtun nationalists like Khushal need to b*tch against Massoud basically because the guys ethnic background. The only reason many of these hilarious nationalists hate Massoud its because he exposed Pashtuns. He defeated Najibullah, he defeated Hekmatyar and he even humiliated Taliban. Massoud had a huge problem: manpower shortage. Taliban had thousands of uneducated Pashtuns from across the border and Pakistani troops who came into our country in order to fight against those who stood against Pakistan (basically non Pashtuns, Pashtuns have always loved Pakistan).

Massoud proved Pashtuns are not that warrior race nor that brave at all. Its all empty words. Pashtuns lack of proper organization. They are too emotional and sensitive. Its very easy to take advantage of them. No wonder they are the most miserable people in the region. Now if a war breaks between India and Pakistan, Punjabis will send thousand of these uneducated fools to the frontline to die for them.. and you know what? Most of them will go happily to face death just in order to prove their fake sense of "manhood".

Shapur is rational and cerebral guy. On the other hand, you are a biased tribal fascist. You have some sort of personal vendetta against him.

You are a chronically angry person that often read hostile intent into other people's neutral thoughts.

You don't even know the meaning of "neutral". All you can do is bring up that old and weak link every time we discuss about our national hero, Ahmad Shah Massoud, the savior of Afghanistan. You are an intellectually dishonest person (at least when it comes to Masssoud).

            Take care.

Nah, your national heros are American generals who are naive to think they can create a client regime with corrupt persiofacists and pashtun nationalists who lack grass root support.

I gave you links to 8 western authors about massoud and his freedom fighting non sense. There are many more authors that confirm it. Your beef about your "Tajik Ali Jinnah" is with them, not me. My thoughts are neutral because I bring the facts out about any one whether Tajik, Pashtun or American. You just don't like it when the facts are about the Tajiks.

You are disingenuous and lied about there being no resistance in non-Pashtun areas...academics say the most effective commanders were from these areas! Those sources just discuss the ceasefire. They don’t claim he was trained and nurtured by the Soviets in the Middle East dating back to the mid-70s like Richardson does or that the Panjsher offensives were a sham. The US Congressional report from 1990 cited by Girardet claims Gulbuddin had links and agreements with the KGB as well. He was even willing to reach a power-sharing agreement with the Stalinist Hafizullah Amin. Once you enter the arena of politics pragmatism takes precedence over ideology, especially in Afghanistan. None of these organizations were sinless and they all observed realpolitik/balance-of-power logic.

I read that one of the main impetuses behind the ceasefire was that Hezb-e-Islami cut off all of Panjsher’s supply lines as it was being bombarded. Olivier Roy says the ceasefire was part of a “break-out” strategy and according to Mark Urban and William Malley, Massoud sent his fighters to areas like Shamali and Balkh to assist the guerilla fronts there. Two assassination attempts on him by the KGB and KHAD were carried out during this period as well…why would they try to kill him if they were in cahoots with him? Here are interesting quotes in the works of Soviet generals Lyakhovsky and Gramov who claim the ceasefire was a mistake on their part and that Massoud benefited most from it.

Check out the chapters “Genocide Throughout the Country” and “Genocide in districts around Kabul.” Chemical warfare was even employed in areas like Parwan and Badakhshan. Here’s a PDF version of the book-

To answer the OP's question, Tajiks from Tajikistan were employed as translators/advisors and served in the army. Some were executed for refusing to fire on their Afghan brethren.

Two events shaped Tajik national consciousness in 1979: the Soviet invasion of neighbouring Afghanistan and the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Tajik units sent to fight ethnic Tajiks in Afghanistan developed fervently anti-Soviet sentiments, often refusing direct orders to fight. In 1985 some eighty Tajik soldiers were shot for refusing to fire on their Tajik Afghan kin or fellow Muslims of other Afghan ethnic groups. The Islamic Revolution that overthrew the monarchy in Iran, led by Shi’a Muslim zealots, had a lesser effect on the more secular Soviet Tajik population; nevertheless, the revolution augmented a reculturation and a renewed interest in the long suppressed Islamic religion. So now you admit that the agreement had taken place after exhausting the "weak link strategy." Your now attempting to move the goal post by saying he did it because the agreement benefited from him which just proves he was an opportunist. There are reports of him having Soviet/Russian advisers during his reign from 92-96 and that it were the Russians promising him continued support that convinced him and Rabani to violate the agreement of the powersharing gov where Rabani refused to step down as agreed to by the powersharing gov.

Russia used Massoud and Dostom as a buffer between them and Pashtuns because they thought Pashtuns would give sanctuary to groups that wanted to topple Central Asian dictators where Russia had client regimes. Those client Regimes are slowly crumbling.
