there were, but usually Peshawar valley was the border line for the most part in history of Indic/Iranian civilizations. Peshawar has always been known as gateway to India/South Asia

That said, genetically afghans do have 10-15% dna from the ancient Indian population known as (ASI), this was over 8000 years ago though, when the population of the region was much smaller, and there were no states or nations established, so people were traveling and going freely everywhere

The border has usually been roughly at the Indus River. Historical Iranic (Pashtun) empires such as Kushans, Bactrians, Scythians and Hepthalites however have expanded deep into India, while Indic civilisation were mostly confined to the subcontinent through geographic barriers (such as mountains). One exception however I can think of is the Mauryan empire.

Well Gandhara, the most important civilization in the Peshawar valley was Indic, in more recent times it has been Indus river

This myth of indus river being border for pashtuns need to put to rest. Even in lower indus valley region on western side serakis and sindhi was spoken and later on baloch introduced balochi. So where is pashto? KPK as we know has been pashtunized in last few hundred years. And north western indus valley(gilget, chitral) is still dominated by dard languages etc

So indus river being boundary for pashtuns let alone Afghanistan since ancient times is biggest lie being repeated by certain people. The border for pashtuns was Sulaiman mountains further west of indus river in lower indus valley and from there pashto language spread.

The Greek historian Strabo (1st century BC) says Indus River was the boundry between India and Ariana 2 thousand years ago. Even the greeks knew that India began on eastern side of Indus. This was 2 thousand years ago so the Indics might have moved to the west of Indus river later on or they might have lived there as a minority. Here is the direct quote, you can check it yourself as well

the Indus River was the boundary between India and Ariana, which latter was situated next to India on the west

makes sense. the Achaemenians also set their borders at the Indus River, calling the lands beyond the River, Hindustan.

Iranic DNA transfer from the Iranian plateau into South Asia occured way more frequently than than vice versa though. This is why a good majority of Bollywood type Indics (Pakis and North Indians) tend to look more like Iranians, Kurds and Afghans:

But this phenotype is rather rare in South Asia, hence why it dominates Bollywood...

Punjabis from Pakistan (if these pictures aren't wrong, they are probably most West Asian shifted Indic group, but the deeper you go into SOuth Asia from here on, the less West Asian shifted the avarage phenotypes get):

I think Punjabis might be closest Indics to Iranians and Afghans, but they still have an Indian shade over them, in the sense that most people will guess them to be ''Indian'' before anything else.

Pakistanis (ethnic Punjabis) I have met in the West all had this phenotype:

I think Pakistani Pashtuns might the furthest into West Asia, Indic DNA has transfered, thus making it close to non-existent in Afghanistan and westward:

Pakistani Pashtuns who look minimally Indic:

We have modern sources and common sense to see pashto was introduced much later. Gandhara was Indic, hindu shahis were indic. Only 47% of people in KPK British census were proper pathans, rest being made up with dards, hindkowans, gujjars etc and low caste pashto speaking pathans like pirachas/toramana types.

They do nice mujra dancing. One thing I notice is Punjabi women tend to be bigger and more meaty (not fat) but meaty, then other Indians. Both Pakistani and Indian Punjabis
