  • Traitors in Pashtun history

By traitor i mean those Pashtuns , who acted against the national or tribal interest of Pashtuns , and , for rank or money, joined ghair to fight against their own Pashtuns. In my opinion these numerous traitors in our history deserves more attention than heroes. In this thread i will add small description of various traitors from time to time.

Arbab Muhammad Khan Khalil of Tahkal , Peshawar

Today i would like to introduce a traitor of early 19th century. Arbab Muhammad Khan, one of the chief of Khalil tribe of Pashtuns, joined the cause of Sikhs. Hari Singh Nalwa, a detester of Pashtuns, made him a 'nawab' and appointed him 'arbab' of Khalil tappa and Doaba. Arbab Muhammad Khan received the grant of "mawajib' from Ranjeet Singh togather with a jagir of rupees sixty thousands rupees. This traitor was killed in 1837 while fighting on the side of Hari Singh against Afghan ruler, Dost Muhammad Khan.

Yes, entirely in Peshawer district. They are cousins of Mohmands and Daudzais.

i can't agree with this thread. there is no such thing like pashtun interest especially Pashtun nationalism is still an unborn child. we all know Pashtun were mercenaries who most of the time stand with in ranks of mughal, persian, turks, british and punjabay against their own tribals for their personal gains. sometime they managed to stand over ethnic lines with other pashtun tribals but that was for limited interest and should not be considered as pashtun interest. so what's wrong if some one joined Sikh ranks especially when he was paid well?
the whole concept of traitor here does not actually fit well. i think traitor should be considered those who deceived pashtun and changed loyalties in war times.

I agree with Marwat here. There is no such a thing as "national interest". Everyone defines it in his own way and nobody can really achieve a concensus on it.

National interest is a political concept invented to manipulate and fool the masses.

The whole notion of nationality is alien to Pashtuns and it is a relatively new concept in Europe. Most people just claim to know what it is because schoolbooks tells them so.

The concept of loyalty varies between pashtuns I guess, this thread reminded me of a gem from a few years back.

Then whats the difference, the one changing his loyalty during war time is also offered money and position.......traitors in the history were those whose actions injured their own qaum and qabila for cause of the ghair. The iconic Mir jafar is called ghadar for a reason. The traitor status of ones going against their own qaum for some firm ideology can be debated, but not those who sold themselves for money and rank.

Any way my list of traitors in our history, is based on my opinion and perception, members can disagree with it.

Traitor of the day: Shamshir Khan Tareen (or Tarin)

Shamshir Khan Tarin was a high ranking Pashtun mansabdar in Mughal army. He was appointed governor of Kabul and Ghazni by Aurangzeb Alamgir. In 1667 when war erupted between Yousufzais and Mughals, Shamshir Khan was sent from Kabul to join the forces of Mughals engaged with the enemy, the Yusufzais. Untill the arrival of Mir Bakhshi from Delhi, Shemshir Khan Tareen took the supreme command of the Mughal forces and fought several battles with Yousafzais. This traitor, burnt down all the crops in Yousafzai plains, destroyed their farms and homesteads in lowlands. On 4th June 1667, this traitor captured three Yousafzai villages and four hamlets one after another. The houses of Yousafzais were burnt down, the property looted and no vestige of cultivation was left. In 1670, Aurangzeb again sent Shamshir Khan to chastise Yousafzais. On this occasion Shamshir Khan built a fort at Langarkot (in mardan) to effectively deal with Yousafzais. In late 18th century British officer Captain Scott found a white marble slab in the ruins of langarkot with Persian inscription, which says,

"In the 12th Year of Aurangzeb Alamgir , equal to 1080 hijri, Shamshir Khan Tarin, on the part of government , conquered this country of Mandanr and constructed this fort , mosque and well."

The marble slab was sent to Peshwar museum.

I want to name a Traitor to Pashtuns but it will be a very unpopular response. ask me if you really want to know.
