  • Afghan Empires?

hat do you consider and Afghan empire. I have seen many people online who have said that an Afghan Empire has to be Pashtun but I completely disagree with that I believe that any empire that began in Afghanistan or was started by an Afghan should be considered one. Here is what I consider to be Afghan Empires.
    Kushan Empire 30-375
    Hephtalite Empire 408-670
    Saffarid Empire 861-1003
    Samanid Empire 819-999
    Ghaznavid Empire 977-1186
    Ghorid Empire 879-1215
    Khiliji Empire 1290-1330
    Lodi Empire 1451-1526
    Mughal Empire 1526-1857
    Suri Empire 1540-1556
    Hotaki Empire 1709-1738
    Durrani Empire 1747-1826

Also what in your opinion is the greatest Afghan Empire?

I don't consider the saffarid, saminds or ghazanvid's as afghan empires since they were of non-pashtun origin.

I see your point but with most countries if the empire started there it could be considered that countries empire. Also I have seen that Mahmud of Ghazni's mother was from Zabulistan.

Samanids were from Bukhara i believe. Saffarids were from the south, but they were Persians, not Pashtuns orginally from the Afghan-Iran border. Ghaznavids were just barbaric turks, but you have a point about Ghaznavi's mother though.

Your right about the samanids I always thought they were from Balkh but looks like I was wrong. However about the Saffarids even if they were persian they were still based in Afghanistan, so if we deny them as Afghans then we would be denying Kushans, Hephtalites, and the Ghorids as Afghan since they havent been proven to be Pashtuns (although there is allot of evidence that Ghorids were pashutns). Also Pashtuns had most presence in Ghaznavid empire allong with turks since it is based in Ghazni.

wrora, You can also add to your list the Indo-Scythian kingdom created by the Saka in Afghanistan and Northwestern India but they were very close related to the later Kushan, who were also of saka origin but orginated more in the east. Pashtuns are decendants of eastern Saka who lived in afghanistan and survived the turco-mongolian invasion. Before the turks invaded central asia , people closely related to pashtuns ( Saka, Sarmatians, Scythians, Massagetae,...) populated all of Central Asia and even south russia.

I also would like to mention the kamboja who orginated from afghanistan and had some kingdoms in india , which they invaded various times. They were also called Asvaka and many believe that the name afghan orginates from Asvaka. Asvaka means basically horsemen and it seens that the kamboja/asvaka were southeastern saka people who lived very early in Afghanistan.

"Even the name Afghan is Aryan being derived from Asvakayana, an important clan of the Asvakas or horsemen who must have derived this title from their handling of celebrated breeds of horses" (See: Imprints of Indian Thought and Culture abroad, p 124, Vivekananda Kendra Prakashan).
Their name (Afghan) means "cavalier" being derived from the Sanskrit, Asva, or Asvaka, a horse, and shows that their country must have been noted in ancient times, as it is at the present day, for its superior breed of horses. Asvaka was an important tribe settled north to Kabul river, which offered a gallant resistance but ineffectual resistance to the arms of Alexander "(Ref: Scottish Geographical Magazine, 1999, p 275, Royal Scottish Geographical Society).

Of course all these people would be the ancestors of Pashtuns since they originated from Afghanistan. But don't forget the Bactrians and Scythian's, they had a language and culture almost identical to Pashtuns making the, the first most likely ancestors of Pashtuns.

You are right, the Bactrians spoke an eastern iranic language like modern Pashtuns and Scythians .Their language was not related to persian but closely related to modern pashto and pamiri languages. They died out in northern Afghanistan because Turks and Persians forced them to adopt persian. But many of them survived as Pashtuns till today. Pashtuns are descendants of many different native eastern iranic tribes (Saka, Kushan, Hepthalites, Arachosians, Kamboja/Asvaka, Bactrians) who joined a tribal confederation and represent with pamiri people the native population of central asia before persians and turks invaded it.

Thats the most true history of pashtuns ' history...Word scythians or sakas is derived from Isaaka (son of ishaque as)...if you read the path of ancuent israelites ...theur migration pattern to greek then across dead sea finally to afg,pak...and another path via medes in persia...it matches pashtuns.Though not all pashtuns are originally from there some are of various neighbouring ethnicities...that assimilated with pashtuns and adopted same culture language esp when pakhto had its golden times to be spread.
The timings of settling of those various ethnicities and tribes sometimesoverlapp sometimes differ.

                              Pashtuns origin:

Prophet Yaqub or Israel aliyhesalam, had 12 sons, who each formed a tribe. They were Prophet Yusuf as(his two sons Manessah and Ephraim), Benyamin, Issachar, Shimeon, Levi, Gad, Asher, Dan, Naphthali, Judah, Zebulun, and Reuben who were each latter alloted land in the Levant. The tribes were in the beginning united especially under Prophets Dawud(David)as, and Sulaiman as(Solomon), but then after the death of the latter, they split, where 10 tribes united and formed a united kingdom in the north of Palestine as the Kingdom of Israel, and the other two Judah and Benjamin, formed the Kingdom of Judea.

This long before Ancient Greece, Rome and Persians. At that time the Assyrians in Iraq had an Empire stretching from Asia Minor in the West till Badakhshan in the East. They invaded the northern kingdom of Israel and took away the 10 tribes into slavery and then had a section of their population transported and re settled them to the extreme east of their empire which is where Afghanistan and Khyber Pashtunkhwa is today.

This is infact confirmed in the Old Testament itself where in the Book of Kings it is mentioned that the exiled tribes of Israel were taken and settled by the Gozan river (Amu Darya) in the east, and around Habor(Pesh-awor or by awor), and in the city of Hara (Herat) and Halah (Balkh), and that they remained there settled till this day.

And is then when places perhaps with Israelite names appeared in this region like Kabul, Zabul, Jaji, Karkh, Khyber, etc.

This is the first wave of the Israelite settlement in what is today Afghanistan.

Another group of the enslaved Israelites who while being transported by the Assyrians, escaped slavery and moved north of the Caucasus and latter came to be known as the Scythians, or Children of Ishaq as the author in the link above explains. The same Scythians that interacted with the Ancient Greeks, and fought against them alongside the Persians.

After the Assyrians came the Babylonians, who invaded Judea, and brought the remainder two tribes Judah and Benyamin to captivity in Babylon. The were in turn invaded by Cyrus the Great, the Ancient Persian, who allowed Judah and Benyamin to return to Palestine. However by then some of the Benjaminites made their way to the east where the other Israelites were already settled and joined them there. They intermixed broadly and heavily with their cousins. It is here where the name "Pashtun" or "Pactyans" or "Pathans" appeared. Pactan, or Pashtun comes from Pithon, who a grandchild of King Saul or Malik Talut who was the first King of united ancient Israel, and who was a grand child of Benjamin the son of Prophet Yaqoob.

This is the second wave of settlement.

Coming back to the Scythians, they too latter migrated southwards and joined their cousins in what is today Afghanistan. In so much that Zabulistan ( the land of the children of Zabol or Zebulon son of Yaqoob) came to be synoynoms with Sakastan or the land of Scyths, or children of Ishaq who came from the north. In fact Pashtu, is one of the living examples of ancient Scythian still spoken today,

It is in this context that the Hepthalites appeared, in the same region and took prominence in the face of Persians and other powers. They spoke according to historians an eastern Iranian language, (similiar to Scythian Pashtu?), and although assumed by outsiders to be possibly white huns, however that being just a fake personification taken by the hepthalites themselves to scare their contemporaries and enemies.

The fact that the Hepthalies, who latter became known as "Abdalis", identified themselves with/as Pashtuns ( from Pithon of the household of Benjamin), and spoke Pashtu ( the language of Scythians-children of Ishaq ), and lived/ruled in the same region of Zabulistan and Kabulistan, leaves a strong possibility of their identification with the tribe of Naphtahli , that formed part of the tribes of the Scythians or Sakas that came from the north.

The final wave of some tribes in jeruselum came in small amount after prophet Isa as in afghanistan_Pakistan(NWFP) regions (guided children of israel) who didnt fought their war alongwith the awaited messiah Jesus (Isa ) as that was promised in scriptures.Portion of guided children of israel left in today palestine, syria, jordan. The unguided children of israel (jews) spread across europe and today s states like Australia,America,England...They heavily intermarried khazars (jewish converts) and romans...
The final prophecy of awaited messiah with guided children of israel has yet to be fulfilled.
