  • Pashto Calendar

    I was reading Khushal Khan's Poetry the other day and he says "Drem Khor" to talk about a Calendar Month. When I asked my elders about this they said that their recall their grandparents using a previously existing Pashto calendar and that this is what this refers to.

    Can someone here please write about the Pashto Calender? Was it Solar or Lunar and can its months be listed in sequence?

    Another elder said that it was just Pashtun words to describe the Lunar Calendar. He said for instance Ustraay Khor was the 6th Islamic Month.

      Pashtuns use both solar and lunar calendars . The solar calendar is used mainly in Afghanistan in an official way as it is the official calendar constitutionally and following are the names of its months in Pashto.

      Woray=March-April

      Ghowayay=April-May

      Ghbarghole=May-June

      Changaskh=June-July

      Zmaray=July-August

      Wagay=August-September

      Tala=September-October

      Larrm=October-November

      Leenda=November-December

      Marghumay=December-January

      Selwaga=January-February

      Kab=February-Marc

      The pure Hijri Islamic calendar is used by all Pashtuns especially for religious holidays or religiously more important months like Ramadan and Eids. Otherwise Pashtuns through out use Gregorian calendar for political, commercial and other purposes.

      Wrhombai khor=Rabi ul Awal

      Dwayama khor= Rabi ul Thani
