  • Question about Pashtuns

I was told to write an essay about Afghans and Pashtuns and am curious about something. I read somewhere online that the Pashtun society comprises of the following segments:

    1) Pashtun people
    2) Kasabgars(carpentars, hair dressers, cleaners etc etc)
    3) Mullahs, Miangans and Sabzadgans

Why is there are divide? Are number 2 and number 3 not pashtun by race? What races are they?

Please read and search this site for detailed information on the subject matter as many times this subject has been discussed threadbare in other topics.

Who is a Pashtun? The common definition of a Pashtun is a person whose father , grandfather and ancestors are Pashtuns. Who definitely belong to a Pashtun tribe and consequently a sub tribe or khel. Being pashtun is by birth not by conversion or adoption. No Tajik or Rajpoot for example can become a Pashtun if he or she is not born from a Pashtun father.(Remember father not mother).

Additional qualification for being a Pashtun is speaking Pashto language, observing tenets of Pashtunwali and having a piece of agricultural land.

Kasabgars(artists or artisans) are non Pashtun people living in Pashtun society and may qualify all other prerequisites for being a Pashtun like Pashto, Pashtunwali and may have a piece of purchased land(not inherited in case of pure Pashtun) but they do not have tribal affiliation and do not have a khel.

Where from and why these people live besides Pashtuns and many times apparently seem Pashtuns? Traditional Pashtuns are land owners. They just enjoy being a land owner, manage his hujra(communirty center), go for hunting or wars, participate in community works etc but not engage in financial earning like having a business shop or does not perform works like making pots(kulal), cutting hair(nayee), loading un -loading(paracha), singing/entertainment(daman),repairing shoes(chamyar) etc. For all such works he has these non Pashtuns called kasabgars

For religious and spiritual purposes(after conversion of Pashtuns as Muslims), a Pashtun engages Mulla who is responsible for management of the mosque and performance of religious rituals. Some religious minded people do not perform as a professional Mullah in a mosque but being holy people enjoy special status called sahibzadagan or myagan. Sahibzada means a little more important status than Mian or mullah. These are often wealthy people. A pure Pashtun owns land called dawtar(daftar) but a Mian or Mullah also owns land called serai in some parts of Pashtunland. This is mainly in areas where Sheikh Milli distributed the land as in Swat.

This means Pashtun society is purely secular as it has divided the functions for a Pashtun(political, social). economic(for artisans), cultural(artists) and religious(Mullah, Mian or Sahibzada). But after 1979 invasion of former USSR and due to economic hardships, many Pashtuns are now engaging in different activities as having business shops etc. Because of religious extremism and Salafism, many Pashtuns are now performing roles of Mullahs.

kasabgars and Mullahs/miangan usually used to come from other areas like Central Asia or Arab countries but there is a theory that many these so called non Pashtuns were basically Pashtuns but because of drugs or other socio-economic problems, they lost their piece of land, thus lost social status as a Pashtun and migrated to other Pahstun areas and started different professions to earn livelihood. There are cases that some Pashtuns got spiritually inspired and got spiritual roles like miangan and sahibzadagan but in their original places of birth, they were Pashtuns.

This may be true for those Pashtuns who resemble Pashtuns in physical features. I have seen barbers with blue eyes and exactly like a typical Pashtun. Some kasabgars really seem to be non Pashtuns because of their features but also because of their habits as a typical Pashtun will always behave in a sober and responsible way but a Kasabgar usually engage in gossips and trivial.

Pashtuns are now a days also engaging in cultural and fine arts related activities. You may find pure Pashtun singers who are not daman but sing songs and dance in public. This is a good change.

Non Pashtuns may belong to different races as some are of Arab origin like Parachgan or Myagan, some may be Indics like Nayan or chamyaran and some may be Pashtuns but lost Pashtun identity because of losing the social status.

For me Jew is a person adherent to the religion of Judaism like Muslim is a person believing in Islam. I have seen Jews of all colors and races. There are Polish, American, Russian, Argentinean, European and even Iranian or Arab or Pakistani or Afghan Jews. It means being Jew is not belonging to one race or one ethnic group.

On the other hand Pashtun is the one who belongs to Pashtun race or ethnic group. Being Pashtun is by blood not by ideology or religion or school of thought.

May be there were Pashtuns who were practicing Judaism at one juncture of time but now majority of them are Muslims. But there are Pashtuns who are Christians, atheists, secularists or apostates. Pashtuns are Aryans or Aryans are original Pashtuns or Pashtuns are just Pashtuns, an exclusive class of themselves.

Pashtuns are not Jews now by religion and Jew as a race does not exist. All Jews do not have similar noses but the usual pattern of nose size and shape is a bigger and longer nose for Pashtuns.
