  • Modern day Afghan weddings

Hmm I've seen Afghan weddings of today, and was just wondering where do these traditions come from? I've seen many Afghans and Pashtuns alike with different wedding customs and such, but the most popular are ones like this: Rudaba & Arwin Afghan Wedding Highlights - YouTube where does this custom come from? According to some Pashtuns they say it came from Soraya Tarzi, when she returned from her trips in Europe and urged Afghans to follow this new custom?

Idk I'm just curious and wanting to learn more about it

I do,nt think pure pashtuns of afghanistan celebrate like this wedding.i mean pashtuns of bordering and south -east areas such as kunar, paktika, pakhtya, hilmond etc follow there own custom.
This is an iranian culture influence by west. The tajiks and persainised -pashtuns follow this custom, yes.

What's a pure pashtun? How does one become more or less..

Coca cola was invented by the west, If i drink it, does that make me an impure pashtun? Shisha was invented in the middle east, if i smoke it, does that make me an impure and fake pashtun?

In relation to the wedding, a lot of it has been copied from western weddings. I have seen both western weddings and Afghan weddings. Honestly though, It's their money, their wedding, why do you even care? lol

The Video doesn't work. If I have time, I will read you an excerpt about Afghan (Modern) weddings as they were in the early 1940's as described by an Afghan historian.

It works, you just need to watch it on youtube as embedding is not allowed.

It comes from modernization and a rejection of tribal culture by adopting a western approach. Whatever it may be it's infinitely better than selling off your daughters at 8 to settle blood feuds.

How is it Modernization? Cultures are always going to evolve, regardless of whether "Modernization" has occurred or not. Whatever, you mean by modernization..

Modernization in terms of conforming to the standards of the modern world - being the west, and in this case, performing western styled weddings rather than traditional ones.

I've honestly never seen any afghan weddings like what have been posted in this thread though, not in afghanistan or the west.

The couple in your video are most likely tajik.

In most cases, Pashtuns from different tribes or regions will have a different set of customs and traditions on how they celebrate a wedding.

Example: Some Pashtun weddings will be segregated and will only allow people of the same gender to be in a room together, while Pashtuns from the more urban areas will have both men and women present in the same room together (mostly female members) although their are exceptions.

I think in general, Pashtun wedding customs will be completely different of that of a tajik or an uzbek or any other ethnicity. Not all ethnic groups will have similar weddings.
"Revenge is a dish best served cold".

You have Afghans in the west, who has weddings like this, doesn't matter if they are Tajik or PAshtun, all the weding were I went to here in Europe the bride had white dress and the guy a suit. But most Pashtun also wear first Afghan clouth and than western....

IN Afghanistan you have in Urban cities somthing similar but men and women are segregated.

In villages its again another type of weding, I find the difrence not so big, between difrent ethnicities, only Tajiks have some weird thing with mirror....

Copieng from other cultures is not new, people do it all the time, thats how cultures evolve.
