  • Old Armenian sources on Central Asia

In this thread I will post translations of texts written in Old Armenian by various Christian historians of Armenia (I have the texts already in translated form from old Armenian, partly in Russian partly in Armenian). The text are for interest and information only and should be seen through the prism of time and ideology of the people who wrote it ( if You have questions on the ideology they had, I'll explain You in more detailed manner).
I won't post often, as I have not much time.
What I ask You is not abuse this thread for insults, trolling and so on, otherwise I simply won't translate and post anything.
Also I want to clear out that the view of the historians is not my view, so f you find any insulting citations, don't blame me for it.
The texts are from various authors, Initially I'will translate a compilation translated into Russian giving you the time of life of the author to explain when it was written.

    With best regards your Janaparh.

      Origin of the Parthian dynasty:

Movses Khorenatsi(~410-490 AD) Book II, Chapter 68.
Royal clans, from which derive the Parthian tribes:
The sacred history presents us Abraham as twenty-first patriarch from Adam . From him derive the Parthian people. The scripture (Bible) says : after the death of Sarah , Abraham takes as his wife Hettura , from who they were born Emran and his brothers, whom Abraham in his lifetime separated from Isaac sent to the eastern countries . From derive the people Parthian , and the last - Arshak the Brave, who overthrew the Macedonian yoke and reigned in the land of the Kushans for 31 years , after hi, Artashes his son 26 years, after him his son Arshak , called the Great, who killed Antiochus and made his brother Vagharshak king of Armenia, making him the second himself . Himself he went to Bahl (Balkh) made his throne and reigned for 53 years . Thus his descendants were called Pakhlavas, while the descendants of Vagharshak are called Arshakuni, after their forefather.

      Bishop Sebeos (7th century AD)
Chapter II. The Parthian revolt , which occurred at this time

" ... In the eleventh year of the rule of king Antiochus the Parthians revolted and freed themselves from the power of the Macedonians , and Arshak the Great, the son of the Tetalian king of Bahl-Shahastan, became king in the country of the Kushans , which has then submitted all the nations to the East and the North ...
Here are the Parthian rulers , who reigned after Arshak , their father, in Bahl-Shahastan in the country of Kushans . They say that Arshak the Parthian king , had four sons : the first one became king of the Tetals, the second king of Cilicians, the third of Parthians and the forth of Armenians"

We seem similar for 2 reasons:
1)Influence (in various times Armenia or a part of it was part of Akhemenid, Parthian, Sasanian... states)
2)Culture and language are closely related to Indo-Iranic branch, most likely Armenian branch and Indo-Iranich branch splitted, and then later Indo-Iranic splitted in Indic, Iranic, Nuristani.
So even not being an Iranic language Armenian is closer to Iranic languages then to many other Indoeuropean (however also with other languages like specially Greek there are many parallels)

The Armenian king Khosrov calls their relatives – the Kushans to fight against the Sassanian dynasty

              Agathangeghos (3rd – 4th century AD)
" ... Eventhough Khosrov was in great grief in connection with the submission of their relatives and their service to the Istakhr kingdom, and they were pacified , and Khosrow sent his messenger to them so that his family followed him against the new kingdom. His relatives from the Kushans region and other areas were brave tribes and courageous warriors had to help him , his relatives and the princes of Parthia did not follow the order of Khosrow and they got together and decided to submit to the domination of Ardashir against the tradition and parental line . "

Movses Khorenatsi Book II. Chapter 67.
How Agathangeghos tells briefly: " As we have said , after Vagharsh, the royal power inherits his son Khosrow , the father of St. Tiridat the Great. Agathangeghos, the skillful secretary of Tiridat , tells briefly about Khosrow and his relatives , says among other things, the death of the Parthian king Artavan about crushing of Parthian domination by Ardashir , son of Sasan , the subjugation of Parthians tohis power ; about the vengeance of Khosrow the father of Tiridat, who devastated the land of Assyria and Persia by his raids. Whereupon the historian continues: " Khosrow went to his home – the Kushans country to ask his relatives, to help, in order to confront Ardashir . But they , says the historian , did not listen to Him and prefered to live under the rule of Ardashir than to help their brother. However, without their help Khosrow attacked his enemy and within ten years never ceased to attack his land "

              Book II. Chapter 72.
Khosrow , received assistance from Philip, and goes to fight against Ardashir

" Due to the troubles arising in the empire , Philip could not send the Roman legions to aid Khosrow , but he helped him with a certificate calling all the provinces to help Khosrow. Having received such an order, troops from Egypt and Pontos came to help him out. With so many troops Khosrow went to Ardashir , give him a battle , made him flee and took Assyria and other countries with the seat of the king .
Khosrow sent a second time messengers to his reltives the Parthians and Pahlavas and to all the warriors of the Kushan lands to come to him for vengeance against Ardashir , promising them to crown the most worthy of them, to avoid that they lose the royal power . But from the above-mentioned families Aspahapet Pahlav and Suren Pahlav have not expressed consent; Khosrow therefore returns to our country being not so much pleased with his victory, as saddened by the refuse . Then comes back to Khosrow some of his ambassadors sent to the noblest tribe living in the innermost part of the state , named in Bahl ; brings him the news that his relative - Vehsachan, with his family, the Karen Pahlavs did not submit to Ardashir , and will come to your call . "

Intresting map (though it makes no sence in some instances). Intresting that they placesed the Abdals (Hephtalites) so far up north, this would support Dr. Habibi's suggestion that Abodali = Yaftali

Well the Hephtalites were known to be from the Pamirs and then later migrated into Tokharistan. So that isn't that far off.

The red huna were based in the hindu kush, they were the Turkhans of Ruy and Samangan in Al-Tabari's history of the arrival of islam, they were later pushed into Kabul and Peshawar by the white huna. The white huna (hephthalites/Abdal) were based further north before conquring Balkh, later ending up along the Helmand as the Zunbil-dynasty.
