Based on his behavior that you find abhorrent, I think he would have an easier time sitting in a room with them than with Ghani Khan or Asfandyaar. He would not however fully agree with them either based on his letters to Mostafa III. His Pan Islamist approach for instance, of trying to win over the Caliph in regarding certain Shiite subsects as additional madhabs would be considered improper by Salafists, though his approach of appealing to the Caliph's scholars and the Caliphate to make the decision might quell their objections. They might also have regarded his terminologies in his letter to Mostafa III when he called the Iranians renegades or rafidas.

otherwise the seekh must be penetrated deep and deep in the rectum of these scoundrels!

Truly! If they are creating a completely propagandistic image then they too deserve the seekh in the rectum. The problem I have with these propagandistic approaches is that the secularist militants seek to dehumanize their adversaries and create a psuedo history. For example, I would be a liar if I tried to say other than what I said above without proof.

For instance, there were other letters of Ahmad Shah where he reproached a Muslim leader in what is now the frontier for adopting Indic ways when the leaders lineage came from Afghanistan. If he were simply a Pan Islamist alone or a purist salafist he may have found this sort of appeal to Afghan heritage unpalatable.

I am compelled to use such a language as you uses such vulgarities in your posts.

This was not directed to you, but my point was that these propagandistic militant secularists are unreliably inventing a pseudo history. They are also doing this for nefarious ends and they have to be held accountable

Did he do well to desecrate the Sikhs shrines or he was a lunatic fanatic barbarian soul enjoying destroying worship places of others which Islam clearly prohibit.

Badlun wrorre, read what I wrote, I am not advocating this and I would actually think Muhammad (S) would not approve of that either. The Quran itself says to not even insult their gods because they would insult Allah and harden their own hearts. My point is that we have to have a FAIR discussion of Ahmad Shah Abdali and Pashtuns and Mullah Omar and Ghani Khan etc and not make patently FALSE claims to try and legitimize behavioral abberancy and then call it indigenous.

My point is that I have seen 1000 Achakzai videos and 1000 ANP videos contriving this pseudo history of a marijuana smoking Ahmad Shah and Afghans who danced with Hindus and suddenly the barbarian Arabs came and brain washed them.

I would respect the secularists more of they simply were honest and said : "We don't care what Ahmad Shah did or what he was or who he was except for his cultural contributions - we understand that he probably even still in this era appeals in his behaviors to the majority rural Pashtuns - but we respectfully disagree with his ideologies and views of the time and would not endorse them. We will not create a pseudo historical ANP hat wearing Ahmad Shah though and we will be utterly honest. If Ahmad Shah's behavior mirrors Mullah Umars we hold both accountable.

He did it all for creating an impact on Sikhs for his worldly designs being an invader not for a religious cause or you think he was doing all this because Islam authorities destroying temples of other religions.

Based on what he wrote about it and the fact that he specifically routed to Armistaar to do it where he could have avoided it - I think he felt Islam justified his approach, yes. Now do I, Barakzai think that Islam justifies it? No I do not. Do I think the majority of rural Pashtuns of that era and a large number of this era wouldnt even give a second thought to this? Yes, I think they would probably not feel to bad about it. Would I agree with this majority view? No.

But if Americans asked me about my history my people, my leaders of the past, my cultures - then I would not lie to them like ANP walas do and tell them things like Ahmad Shah Abali was just like Brad Pitt and his wife was like Angelina Jolie and we Pashtun Nationalists secularist militants are the real Pashtuns and represent the majority view. I would instead tell them the truth of history

You get blind in your worship of Taliban , Islamism and Salafism.

Read above, I think you will see what I am saying. I was presenting the history not endorsing it.

Is it Islamic that he got his authority from Abdal? How can you say that he was chosen by God.

He meant that Allah destined him for the role... like if tomorrow Badlun becomes President of the United Pashtun States then some of his followers might say "God destined Badlun for this role even though Badlun wanted to simply be a teacher etc etc"

Was he a prophet as only prophets are chosen by God not mass murderers and invaders.

Is it Islam to kill other fellow Muslims like Safavids? Is it Islam that he was an authoritarian dictatorial ruler by that time. Except invading others, looting others, killing Hindus and Sikhs and his fellow Muslims what else he did for Islam.

I dont think its Islam per se, but I think Ahmad Shah Baba was influenced by a culturally modified view of Islam but he was also a lettered man had a moral imperative rooted in his role as emperor and defender of Islam. In the era of conquer or be conquered and because he himself was raised in the fire of war (he was a refugee even as a baby when his dad was killed and he was just a boy when he was taken into Nadir's Army and he was still a very young adult when he became a King). This meant that he would for a period rely on literalism and moral imperitives that made sense to him.

My point is that we can understand a lot of Pashtuns through Ahmad Shah and that if Pashtun secularist militants were honest in their discourse they would present the history this way.

Instead they create a red Ahmad Shah... in fact there are various ANP chapters which paint his turban red (even though red clothes and a red turban are seen as womanly by many rural Pashtuns) and try to create an Ahmad Shah that did not exist so as to create a lie that only they can live.

His sending letters or troups to China is not the same as invading Iran or India?

He subsequently set up troops and invaded a local region in question. He did hit and run ops there. He also pissed off the Chinese by taking in the fugitive Khoja Muslims.

And so, Ahmad Shah's reign of terror began. With his newf ound powers, Ahmad Shah seized the opportunity to make his mark. He captured Ghazni from the Ghilzai Pashtuns and then Kabul from the local ruler. He forced himself upon those areas, moving in like a parasite would and depleting the regions. His invasions brought forth waves of chaos and havoc. The people of Ghazni and Kabul—and later on Herat as well as other regions—desperately fought back as they did during the invasions of Changiz Khan. For those people, there was no difference between the atrocities committed by Changiz Khan and those committed by Ahmad Shah about six centuries later. He murdered innocent women and children, destroyed families and homes, and stole everything in sight because he had no honor. Human life meant nothing to him as he left piles of dead bodies in his wake. In a civilized society, a criminal like Ahmad Shah would have been punished for his crimes.

Apart from invading Punjab three times from 1747-1753, Ahmad Shah also captured Herat in 1750 after almost a year of bloody conflict and seized both Nishpar and Meshad in 1751. To this day, the people of North India, Panjub, and Sindh of Pakistan which include Muslim, Hindu and Sikhs associate the name Abdali with the Devil.

Ahmad Shah and his tribesmen tortured, killed, looted, and raped the people of today's Eastern Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Northern India. They took back their booty to Kandahar and enjoyed their stolen goods. In the course of his criminal career, he raided India nine times, stealing the valuable treasures of the Mughul Empire and everything else he could get his hands on. His raids would last for days with unending turmoil; nobody was left with clothes to wear or food to eat; many died from inflicted wounds or even by committing suicide while others suffered in the harsh climates because they had lost their homes. Their livelihood, their grains, their possessions were taken by the looters and sold back to them at exorbitant prices.

On his way back, he couldn't resist attacking the Golden Temple in Amristar and filled its sarovar (sacred pool) with the blood of slaughtered cows and people. The Golden Temple is to the Sikhs what Mecca is to the Muslims so his transgressions were of great proportions. Now, what kind of honorable man would commit such an atrocious act? He had no reason to attack the Golden Temple but did it purely because of the evilness that ran in his blood. He knew that cows were considered sacred by the Sikhs but he disregarded their beliefs and their values.

Over the course of 25 years, he weakened India and its Raj and local government. He ventured into India numerous times and each time, he returned with gold, camels, women, etc. He left a great number of people dead, destroyed cities and lives and families. All of this seemed like fun to him and his people. Therefore, when he died in 1773, his descendants began fighting over the throne. The British took this moment of weakness to step in and create more division. Abdali's sons were busy fighting against and killing each other and the British aided the brothers in staying enemies and gradually they weakened the state and took over. It is because of Ahmad Shah and his gang of marauders who crushed the indigenous people of the regions—the Marathas and the Mughuls—that the entire subcontinent of India including today's Afghanistan was colonized by the British for the 19th century and well into the 20 th century.

You have it wrong Badlun wrorre, I actually thank you for posting your honest view. Your original phraseology above is important. My point is that you should continue to be honest and state what you feel. Although I disagree with some of the history above, this was my only point. I far prefer you state your true sentiments than trying to do what others have done and propagandize and create a pseudo Ahmad Shah.

Once again I disagree with the author of the post, and will respond in due time. I however think its important that you maintain the consistitency you have shown here where you label Ahmad Shah in the same way you would label those that you see as your adversaries today.

All am I asking for is consistency and honesty and I think you are doing your best to give us that.

Now the key to remember is that 95/100 Pashtuns probably would not agree with your sentiments. If you are comfortable with this and still think that its better to be in the 5/100 but still be right whereas the other 95 may be wrong - that is your right, but please do as you did here and continue to state this.

My anger in the past has been more towards others here who lived a contrived history and, if they met a caucasian person they would present a Kite Runner style narrative and not tell the complete view and story to their patrons.

That level of honesty is needed from militant Pashtun secularists when they have discourse with Americans. I think if Pashtun militant secularists were direct in this fashion and told their patrons these realistic things the Americans would tell them "This is too much for us to change and this doesnt help our narrative that we are "freeing" a people" to which the militant secularist would respond "yea but you are crafting the region as we would want you to" and the American would respond "OK but thats not worth a single American life or dollar or valuable American blood."

I do appreciate your last post and agree to present the history as it is.

But I disagree that ANP or nationalists present him in a wrong way. He was a Pashtun, his army was mainly Pashtun, he for the first time unified the Pashtun tribes in a Kingdom, he for the first time founded a Pashtun empire, he wrote in Pashto, he used Pashto as vehicle for his poetic expression and he made Kandahar the Pashtun city to be his capital in spite of all other cities at his disposal.

All this qualifies him to be a Pashtun hero for Pashtun nationalists.

But he did a lot of things against Islam so you declaring him to be the champion of Islam or Pan Islamism is wrong.

Hmm reading about his plunders I really wonder why Kandahar didn't have any big palaces or mosques... it looks kind of low class...If you look at Herat and Mazar and some other ancient cities they al have some big and beautiful mosqs and citys but Kandahar is just...yeah kind of ****y.

Not fully true. Tarikh e Ahmad Shah for instance or all his letters are in Farsi.

Also, his army was not Pan Pashtun. He also utilized Rohillas, mixed Pashtuns, Turkmens, Qizilbashi, Uzbek, Baloch etc.

My point regarding his Pan Islamic mindset was that it is slightly different but very similar to what Pashtuns are accused of doing and harboring today as opposed to the effeminte, caucasian worship centric, secular militant pashtun nationalism.

His championship of Islam is that he was an independent Muslim who placed Islamic causes in his heart with a special zeal.

He was willing to galvanize verbalize and in his poems harmonize his thought processes with Islam as he knew it.

This is in stark contrast to militant secularist coopting of his personage.

Abdul Rashid Dostum would be a more appropriate figure for them to worship since he emulates all the behaviors and has acted according to all the things they hold valuable

Rather Ahmad Shah just by the pure facts and by the history would not be bosom buddies with Asfandyaar, but would find greater affinity with certain Kandaharis that Pashtun Nationalists find unpalatable.

So for instance, Pashtun nationalists would decry his zeal for trying to work together a Pan Islamist army to drive China out of Khoja Muslim Chinese land and for harboring these fugitives. They would view him as mettling in the affairs of others and allowing others to mettle in his affairs and also claim Indics like Waliullah were using him to their own advantage etc.

So sorry, but your proposition doesnt hold weight. His actions find affinity with and are closer to rural traditional Pashtun values and their interpretation of religion (zealous) than the make friends with Ghandi tradition of marxist Pashtuns and Pashtun nationalists. This in turn, with his views on reclaiming Iran, referring to Iranians as rafidis in his letter to Mostafa III, etc place him far closer to the Pan Islamic pole (though once again not completely in line with Salafi purism) than to the red hat wearing ijrathope dancing ways of ANPiites.

His army was mainly Pashtuns. Rohillas are pure Pashtuns. I do not know what do you mean by mixed Pashtuns but still they were Pashtuns. Court language as per vogue was Persian and his historian was Persian but he used Pashto for his poetry. He did not declare himslef as amirul momineen or leader of Muslims but

So Ahmad Shah was solely for the Pashtun tribes and had virtually nothing to do with the non-Pashtuns, except for oppressing them, stealing their land, etc. He held the title of "King of the Afghans" not "King of Afghanistan" because at that time, "Afghanistan" did not indicate a state but instead territories.

Today he is hero of Pashtun nationalists not of Taliban or Salafis.

He did something for Khojas as a tactical maneuver but killed many other Muslims for his other political designs. His letter to caliph was for political motives to control Safavids or shias.

Doesnt matter, he still utilized Baloch and other ethnicities that would help him. Waliullah, one of his mentors was not a Pashtun

Court language as per vogue was Persian and his historian was Persian but he used Pashto for his poetry.

Cop out since he his tarikh could still have been in Pashto.

He did not declare himslef as amirul momineen or leader of Muslims but

He had no need to since he already paid homage to the Caliph as the Caliph. Rather, if he were a militant secularist nationalist he would have tried to create himself as a personal caliph to counter the Turk Caliph. Sorry, that point was just crushed.

So Ahmad Shah was solely for the Pashtun tribes and had virtually nothing to do with the non-Pashtuns, except for oppressing them, stealing their land, etc.

Wrong. You should see how he treated Shahrukh.

He held the title of "King of the Afghans" not "King of Afghanistan" because at that time, "Afghanistan" did not indicate a state but instead territories.

No he didn't. In his time his region was called Khorasan in common dialect. There is one singular poem in which he references the mountain tops of "pashtunkhwa." The rest of the court writings and Tarikh do not style him as such and uses titles such as High King, DureDauran etc.

Today he is hero of Pashtun nationalists not of Taliban or Salafis.

No, the evidence is to the contrary as we noted above.

This is once again you ignoring insurmountable evidence to serve secular militant narratives. His own words and writings are not in support of you.

His actions at Armitsaar are far closer to Mullah Omar's approach than to the effeminate approach of Karzai or the caucasian centric worship approach of the secular militant Pashtun nationalists.

Once again, your claim is staked purely for strategic purposes, but as we showed above, it has no actual factual basis in Ahmad Shah's thought processes, utilization of Islam as a moral imperative etc.

His amritsaar sack, though not in line with the Prophet's instructions were really no different than when Ghaznavi destroyed the giant fallus of Shiva with his sword and yelled Allah hu Akbar.

There was no strategic advantage to sacking that temple since its gold was not stripped etc.

He did something for Khojas as a tactical maneuver

Wrong, he risked the wrath of a very strong Beijing and could have seized some of the territory alone, but sought to collectively organize multiple Islamic ethnicities together under the leadership of the Caliphate - hence his letter to Mostafa III.

He also sheltered the fugitive Khojas which would not be a wise tactic according to the Pashtun Nationalist narrative that does not recognize religious fugitives.

but killed many other Muslims for his other political designs.

Once again incorrect and misrepresentative history. Your brainwashing took you two steps back again. By your standards, Mullah Omar and Taliban have also "killed many other Muslims" as well but you still hold them to an Islamic standard for your purposes while abandoning the standard for your own ideal dystopia. There is also once again no recorded or written evidence to support Ahmad Shah using this as a political narrative or anything other than acting as he believed. Not a single recorded letter exists or document exists where he indicates he is doing anything other than what he believes in.

Also, Shah Waliullah was inviting him in to do away with the secular militant types of his day. It would have been perfectly valid for Ahmad Shah to deal with the same empire that spawned Deen e Ilaahi by Akbar since they were pretty much proposing the same sort of governance that Muslims are against. Collaborators and defenders of that decrepit empire which was far from Islam was what Waliullah was targeting when he invited Abdali and gave him the fatwa.

His letter to caliph was for political motives to control Safavids or shias.

Wrong - in that his own stated words, bits of poetry, and letters acknowledge an Islamic narrative to his moral imperative. He also proposed a joint operation knowing full well that Mostafa III troops were numerically superior and likely to be the owners of the terain they seized. In his letter he described Nadir's Shah reign in divine retribution terms - not as a secular manifestation
Nice try, but you are still historically wrong and your posts done a few above the last indicate exactly where you truly see Ahmad Shah when you are forced to admit his Pan Islamic bent (once again Pan Islamic means Islam as a moral imperative just as Richard the Lion hearted used Christianity as a moral imperitive in the crusades and thought himself as a divinely appointed monarch acting on Urban II's command on behalf of God but himself not being a priest).

No use in backtracking now and trying to become cohesive with the secular militant nationalist narrative when you yourself disowned it above.

Also please note that the article you are quoting was very controversial in the south of Afghanistan when it was written. We discussed this article a while back when it was released since it was considered a major insult by Milletis and Taliban alike when this parsiwaan wrote the article.

You are doing yourself a disservice in relying on a poorly referenced politically motivated article that even Karzai would distance himself from.

Please refer to the home page of this website:

to see that the author is actually a militant hazara.

Here is his commentary on the home page:

"Though many people take part in the problems of the country, it is undoubtedly, the Pashtuns who are primarily behind each and every one of these issues. The articles in this site touch upon each of these issues and illustrate just how they have lead to the desecration of the country and forced others to indirectly partake in it as well. Whether it is through terrorism/talibism or nationalism the Pashtuns have subjugated the country to many hardships. With terrorism/talibism, the Southern Pashtuns used violence to get their way."

So please do a better job referencing your work instead of relying on obviously biased sources that spew hatred and ethnic racism against Pashtuns openly. This does not help your cause but makes it look weaker.

Also, professor Gommans crushes your faux nationalist narrative on page 50 noting:

"From this moment on he (Ahmad Shah) was turned into the "King of the seven climes (farman rawaiyaa haft iqlim) invested with a Godly mission to restore the sultanates of Iran, Hind, and Turkestan. In this heavenly task he situated himself in the early associates of the Prophet and the first rightly guided caliphs."

Let me repeat that since you choose to be selective in what you read.

"In this heavenly task he situated himself in the early associates of the Prophet and the first rightly guided caliphs."

Do you know where this comes from?

                    The Ahmad Shah Nama

as directly translated by Dr. JL Gommans who had also, in his seminal work incorporated the Tarikh etc.

So what we have is direct wording from the Ahmad Shah Nama letter itself.

You will be hard pressed to reproduce the thought processes of secular militancy and its outright repeated insults of Islam and the personage of the Prophet in any of Abdali's work that has been left behind.

Nice try though, I can see why you are doing your best to attempt to legitimize Pashtun nationalism in such a great personage. The problem is simply that your evidences are weak at best.

Bro these guys are completely ignorant of history. Look at the source Badlun references from!

Remember that article? It actually got everyone here at PF united for once when it was written.

What do we expect when these guys reference form this low quality sh-it

They blame religionists and Taliban for backwardsness but man their approach is so uneducated, their arguments so devoid of sense, their evidence so weak, their methodology that of a mental handicap level, their ideology so secular militant, their common algorithm is to come up with conspiracy theories (Toramana claims some ISI agent Durrani invented all of these Ahmad Shah quotes as if the man went back in a time machine and wrote the Tarikh LOL).

I am going to go running and lifting - but I will leave these guys to get schooled by you!

according to your logic he should be more of a shia since he served the Safavids.
He may also be a sikh , since he was the first person to give right to sikhs to govern their areas.

why did waliullah didnt seek help from wahabis from saudi arabia? why seek help from someone who has sworn allegiance to the Ottoman empire?

obviously Ahmad Shah Abdali helped muslims in the subcontinent whenever they would face oppression from the hindus and even trusted the shias but that doesnt mean he was one of them.

I think this thread isnt doing any good ,only insults hurled at the great leader.

Wrorre dont think I am insulting him. I do not judge Ahmad Shah and think he is the father of our nation and the quintessential Pashtun. My point to Badlun in the posts above is that if he hates Ahmad Shah Abdali he should be honest about it etc instead of them trying to recreate or lie about Ahmad Shah and turn him into a secular nationalist.

Does that mean everything Ahmad Shah Baba did was in line with Islam purely? No, but he was a man of his times and did what the majority of his people would do and have done. That is why he is so important - they cannot twist his history without ignoring these incidents.

As an example my point to them is that they have his posters with a red turban all over their meeting places (he probably would not even want that since he never commissioned his own portrait) - and they label certain individuals today as backwards, bigots, etc and cry like babies over the Budda statues but the best they can do when discussing Armitsaar and the Golden Temple sacking is to claim it was strategy or something like that.

Basically my point to them is that if they claim certain religious Pashtuns of today are evil mongers who destroyed artifacts etc then they have to account for this behavior at Armitsaar as well. If they want to talk about how foreigners were let into Afghanistan by certain people then they have to talk about how Khojas amongst others were allowed to take refuge in Afghanistan as well despite being fugitives from Beijing's vantage point.

They get agitated with this and start to recycle nonsense, but thats their problem.

Hafiz Rahmat Khan the Rohilla Chief wrote a long eulogy of Ahmad Shah Baba and noted his colleague had "done all this for the sake of Islam and Afghans."

I am content with this characterization and have no need to judge him, but it is they that decided to coopt him and bas-tardize his history, so now they have to accept that he would spit on them if he was alive today.
