  • Which pashtun tribes/clans in Gujjar Garhi

    Pakhairoona khwago mlagaro!

Does anyone have an idea of which tribes lived in Gujjar Garhi area?

Here's the deal. My great great grand father comes from Gujaro Garhay, Mardan but I have no clue which clan/tribe we belong to. My grandfather later moved to a village near Umarzai, Charsadda and married my grand mother from Prang, Charsadda.

My late grandfather once told me that we were pure pukhtana and from the Khans branch, but what does that even mean?

    Dera manana for any help.

Mardan is the land of Yousafzai, there are small number of afridis, Bajouris etc who have migrated to mardan from other areas but Gujjar Garhi is Garh of Yousafzais.

I have been to Gujar Garhai . Its a small town in Mardan on Malakand Swat Road. Almost all the people there are of Yousafzai tribe except few Gujars and Mohmands. There are few Utmanzais also but definitely your family is Yousafzai as 99% people there are Yousafzais.

This is quite interesting that name of the town is Gujar Garhai(place of Gujars) but very few Gujars live there. I do not know the history why this place has got this name. May be in past before the arrival of Yousafzai Pashtuns were the dominant inhabitants of the area.

Gujars are non Pashtun people living side by side with Pashtuns in many parts of Pashtunkhwah. Even in Swat they have majority areas where thousands of Gujar families live. They speak Pashto except few who also speak Gujri along with Pashto. Those who speak Gujri are generally called Shpoons/shpunkis (shephards) and their main profession is rearing and selling of livestock.

All pashtuns are khans but by your Khan branch your grandpa may mean the elites as khans are the wealthy Pashtuns in Mardan or elsewhere. Khan as such is not a sub tribe or branch of Pashtun tribes.
