  • meaning of Hindu Kush?

Hindu Kush mountains are in northern pakistan and afghanistan, but what is the meaning of it?

some people say, it means hindu killer, but who named it such and why and when? is there a historical reason for it?

    I means Hindu killer.

It was named that after Afghan soldiers of the Durrani empire would bring hindu slaves across the mountain into Afghanistan but would die because of the rabid cold weathers when they were settled there.

True, but someone told me the other theory is that it was named during the expansion of Kushan empire in to south asia. basically the Hindu Kush mountains divided the Kushan land of central asia from Hindu India at the time, thats why they named it Hindu Kush, not sure which theory makes more sense

That's a myth, the indian slaves that were transported to central asia were mostly killed by frost and cold weather, also at the time hindu was a secular term meaning that it was to describe all inhabitants of the indian subcontinent regardless of religion.

there are a number of other theories:
it was the peak of the kushan empire and during that time it was called the kushan pass.
Some also think that the word Kush is a corruption of the word "Koh" which means mountain in the local languages.
Others maintain that it is Hindi Kesh or Hindi Kash which means boundary, the boundary of Hind.

There is a myth concerning the whole "Hindu-Killer" story, when Hindu slaves and soldiers would cross over the mountains they would die, thus thousands of dead hindu bodes were buried in the mountains naming it the Hindu Kush but this is all not true and holds no proper basis for reason, in my personal opinion as the Hindu Kush was called the Hindu Kush even before the great Afghan empires were created which made many Hindu's try and stop their expansions, so what exactly does it mean? No one really knows, one logical one I find is it means entrance into the Hindustan, historically India, the mountains even in history would signify that you were in India, even when Alexander was crossing into India he used them as a landmark to know that he was most defiantly in India now, as soon as he saw them. Very interesting subject of debate no doubt

yes it was named long before recent Afghan empires.

it was named such because in ancient times the hindus wanted to invade through those mountains and they would get killed in numbers ,thats why it was named hindu kush.

This is an Uzbegh term meaning "Kill Hindus". In old days the Uzbegh / Afghan tribes would cross the mountain range and descend upon the plains of Hindustan to plunder and kill seasonally. It was a regular affair for them - like going on a hunt. That is how the name Hindu Kush evolved. Btw, there are now demands in India to change this name. But I doubt anyone in Afghanistan - Pakistan will agree.

Persian trolls will say the word kush came from the word "Kusht" when it doesn't. No doubt the name comes from the old kushan empire.

You have been "reported" for being abusive. Your info is wrong. I have given the correct explanation.
