amanullah had the right idea but his execution was pure stupidity. making loya jirga participants wear western clothing?(i didn't even know about this) denouncing the veil? of course being born and raised as a prince that is disconnected from the people is a recipe for disaster. this basically speaks for his down fall in the video "symbols of change more troubling than change itself." amanullah was your drunk kaka before your drunk kaka was born.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

If he had a strong and capable army, he might have been able to enforce this, but he was too dependent on foreign aid to prop up his monarchy.

I know many admire him and Soraya Tarzi, I have Reservations about him and some of his reforms.

suraya's influence came from her father, Mahmoud tarzai. Niqabs should have been banned right then.
I don't know what those of you talking about the unpopularity of his methods are trying to achieve here...if afghans knew what was good for them, Afghanistan wouldn't have been in ruins today. So we discarded his ways and tried the otherwise... Where are we today?? Compare education and technological advancements of that era with today.. Did it progress or decline?? .

Almost every other reform of Amanullah, if implemented would have reformed afghanistan into a different nation than we know it now, I believe decades ahead.

Just one reform, that derailed tarzi's or amanullah's ideas, was the western dress for women instead of the veil. Just because Soraya liked to dress like a 20s flapper, and amanullah like a prussian emperor in tow, she would have been better advised to keep that to the royal parties, instead of 'reforming' the nation ie the people, who neither had the money nor the penchant for such social frills.

Even now it is a small idealogical minority and a clique of the wealthy that indulge in amanullah/tarzi style of the reforms - and selectively only.

              TorKham lala,
Aside from his obsession with western clothes, is it true that he was better than president Afghanistan had? The reason why I ask this is because my encounters with the oldies always results in them crying for the good old Amanullah days.

Clothes should not be forced upon anyone, but if he was able to make Afghanistan more stable and progressive, I'm sure people could've peacefully expressed his thoughts to him. I assume that he wasn't a khar, who was hell-bent on making girls in Jalalabad, Kandahar, Nangarhar, etc wear booty shorts. Anything would've been better than now, I'm sure when people see a Drone, they might miss his days.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Before I answer this, you have to consider the perspective, milieu and value of people in my circle: father was staunch pashtun nationalist, our family and friends are all traditional conservative villagers - arghandab zabul. Not the misguided fanatics you see nowadays, just hard working, 5 timers who took no crap from any one, especially from citywans.

From my memory they really didnt show much interest. A few who debated more 'politically' admired amanullah. I remember a few times conversations of mashar verge on the topic of women's clothing in kabul, with astonishment on their faces. Later in my life i met my peers who admired Amanullah, these guys were living in kabul, educated, with a framed photo of amanullah khan somewhere on the wall of their homes in macroryan and karte seh, then we lived sarobi (kabul) so i still heard the occasional murmers of free kabul girls, with a frowned head, i too am rooted in kaliwal.

By this stage my family had run dry of opportunities and money, and my father went to pakistan and then on to saudia and took us with him, this was before the end of daud khan years. Our circle remained conservative, but we occasionally met rich westernised pashtuns and we were shocked at their liberal lifestyles, and all these people were admirers of amanullah.

What has to be observed to be fair is that his reforms, having read here and there, seemed to me very egalitarian of a monarch; they were good for the country, for developement of people. however some afghans latched onto those reforms that appealed to their personal lifestyle aspiration, and many of these 'modern' afghans became attached to the reforms that affected women's liberation, dogmatically.

Here lies the problem, the reforms that were appealing to the few rich or openminded people became so prominant that the villagers of my circles, and other across afghanistan, would hear these stories and then wonder what amanullah was upto. You can compare the effect to present day media; dispersal of selective news leading to the fallacy of affirming the consequent, or association fallacy - amanullah forces women to remove the veil there for amanullah's reform is about the veil. clearly it wasn't; there were land reforms, rights of minorities reforms, education for girls reform. So amanullah suffered guilt of association, and this has been what I have observed, from my tiny perspective of a huge picture.

I do however believe that when an Afghan queen dresses like a 20s Flapper and the King in European tails, the influence of the west has then transcended insidiously beyond the sartorial mimicry.

Answer to your question, yes, Amanullah was indeed a reformer for the better of afghans on the whole.

                BTW What are Booty Shorts?

these kings have abused the trust of Afghan nation over and over .

Amanullah Khan(even though i admire him for many things)sacrificed his country and the trust of his people by following a traitor like kamal ataturk who single handedly destroyd the last remains of the Khilafa.
Amanullah Khan gathered people to do Jihad against the invading British Empire but when they were defeated and expelled he himself started acting like the british.
The tarzis are to be blamed for his demise and destruction of a progressive country.
Amanullah khan being the Amir should have known better and so should have the his wife. But no they wanted to act as if they were different than the rest because they were acting british.

ive met Amanullah Khan's son and Daughter at a function.
its funny that his daughter is called miss India.
His son kept on repeating that Amanaullah khan did not call himself Amir but Shah.
i wonder what he means with that.
offcourse he spoke zero Pashto and the whole function was in Parso and it looked more like a persianist gathering as there were tajikistanis and iranians present as well and they spoke as if Pashtuns and Pashto doesnt exist.

having said that i still support his modernisation drive if it didnt involve moral corruption and britisation.

He was to the modernist and the leberals as what mullha Omar and his taliban are to the wahabist and extremists......

But his ideas on education and equal rights to minoritys were more liberal and progressive than some western countrys at that time.
Peopel must not forget that at that time, in US there was huge disrimination against blacks and colored peopel, south Africa had its apartheid systme, Australia didn't even allow non-white peopel in to the country and Europe wel we all know what there happend after a coupel of years....

Amanullah Khan was a very wise, intelligent and far sighted person. He knew that culture is related to development. For development you must have to change the culture. How can you get developed if half of your human resources i.e. women are locked like prisoners in houses.

He knew that dress is very important for movement. How a woman can move freely and participate in economic activities with covered faces and burqas. Men also in loose dress cannot become active. Why we accept paint shirt for army and police but not for other workers!

If you want development then you must have to change the dress code especially for women. Pashtunwali is not in dress or beard. A country which is not rich in natural resources like oil cannot adopt Arabs dress code. Arabs are prosperous because they have oil. We have to work hard both men and women for prosperity.

right just like the so called mujahedin i gues

or let us say your great ali jinah and pakistan lovers the taliban ?

its funny how people still fall for 90 years propaganda spread by british agents who are known and proven for supporting the bache saqqao to over throw amanullah khan .

its even more funnier how people are soo willing to fall for the very same propaganda and then judge without knowing the political context ...

"oh he forced this and that " , oh really ? did he ??? is our king not good enough for wearing an uniform ? are we not good enough for wearing a uniform ? oh wait but its western design , aha . so the pseudo sunnah clothing some people make a joke of theirself and the deen by telling others this and that is "islamic" clothing ....no comment .

Amanullah Khan gathered people to do Jihad against the invading British Empire but when they were defeated and expelled he himself started acting like the british.
right exactly you should have some more gratitude atleast he didnt freed our country for being a proxy state for a ismaeli shia dictatorship of daal eaters .

Not much knowledgeable about Amanullah, so I won't comment on that, however. Nearly every single Turk will disagree with you on Atatturk. Turkey is the most powerful Muslim country right now, and compared to Afghanistan, Afghanistan is stuck in a cavemen era; while Turkey is growing and growing . . . , men lie, women lie, but NUMBERS dont. Turkey today is Muslim, they are progressive, they have awesome schools. In fact, it is every child in Kunars dream to attend an 'Afghan-Turk' school, since they are considered the best in Afghanistan, guess who funds them? Turkiye. This is mostly all because of Ataturk and his reforms, whom Turks hold very dearly. I mean, Afghans are the last person on earth, the last, even after Zimbabwe, to comment on what a regime is, how to create one, or even daring to judge other leaders. Awal khpal zaan to wagora. I recall in Kandahar when they said cell phones are haram because they have cartoons in them. You want to know what the cartoons where? The darn icons. That's how backward Afghanistan was in that era, and still is, however now its improving ten folds when compared to before. Let's not lie to ourselves.

I don't think there is any profession or activity in the world that a woman can not participate in because of the way she is dressed. Sending your wife in to an MRI machine with a burqa on or refusing to remove your veil for identification is a different story. A mullah's (ignorant one) mentality disables him from understanding that a woman who doesn't cover from head to toe is able to maintain her modesty. Your mentality doesn't allow you to think a woman who is not necessarily dressed up in jeans can participate in physical activities or reach her actual potential. Honestly, you and the mullah are not that different. Your mentalities are toxic and unhealthy for the society. You need to step outside your comfort zone and breathe some fresh air.

I understand what you convey above but please think over a woman in burqa , how she will participate for example in foot ball, volley ball, doing research in a lab , a debate competition and other public activity. On personal level can you imagine a woman for example on a beach or in a restaurant having meals in a mixed environment.

I have my own experiences that once I invited my sister and mother to a restaurant on a dinner but my father did not allow them to dine because they had to uncover their faces which they could not and had to return back home with eating a single morsel.
Just loose paints and shirts like qamees partoog without burqa can work. Jeans are not must.
Also purdah is not only dress but Pashtun women are not generally allowed to go out of their homes because of purdah. If you cannot go out how can you participate in public activities including economic and political ones.
