Gulbuddin was one of my favorite Mujahedeen commanders. How is he? Where is he? How much do the Afghans remember him? How much do they love/like him?

This was one of the two guys (Hekmatyar and Dostum) who sent their soilders to our lands!
When our fighter localized their soilders near some Azeri villages close to the Iranian border they fled to Iran hiding by civilians.
One guy was wounded and catched by the Artsakh army.
I have no information about his location now, but he was once in prison in Stepanakert!
His name was Bakhtiyar Baberzai from Mazar-i-Sharif.

Instead of doing something for their country in one of its most difficult times , they had hate enough to sent their people to die in some foreign front(like my Armenia).
This Bakhtiyar gave a small interview to some Russian TV that visited him in the prision, he told he was from a poor family and went to fight as they promised like 5-10 000 dollars.

Ahmad Shah Masud had some secret accordings with the GRU, that even the Soviet Government did not know well actually.
This gave him the possibility to get rid of some of his oponents inside Afghanistan.

As for Gulbuddin, no one has heard from him for awhile.
There was a video interview posted here half a year or a year ago.

He exuded a more mature air, calmer, not so perhaps volatile as he may
have been at the time of the AntiSoviet fight, where he WAS undependable.

Probably he learned with age.

My guess is that Gulbuddin will look better as the decades pass and
much of the intra-party rivalry will have been forgotten.

It is much rumored that he negotiated with the Red Army, or who knows who
specifically. But some parties from the Russian enemy of the Afghan, which
spoils his record for eternity !

Dear Catya, there have been different reportage on it in russian language. Some ex GRU officials of the Soviet time admitted it togther with some Afghan officials.
The reportage has shon also a Russian guy captured by Massud who used him somehow as contact man.
The reports told that they had a kind of oral agreements and never signed any paper, the agreement was like "Soviets will leave Massoud in peace, Massoud leaves the Soviets in peace so he can work on his inner enemies."
The GRU officials said that this agreement evolved in some tensions between the government in Kabul.

Further I don't know. But You may know that later however Massud was sustained by already independent Russia through the Tajik border.
