  • Seraj-ul Emorat

The building above is the Seraj-ul Emorat (building of light) built by Habibullah in 1910.

It served as his palace until his assassination in 1919, afterwards it was used as a state guest house by his son, Amanullah.

In 1928 however, a tribal uprising against Amanullah took place in Jalalabad and the building was reduced to a shell after being looted. It was then abandoned and as a result has remained largely as it was for the last 80 years, an abandoned shell.

Apparently the gardens there remain and are a local attraction.

Does anyone have any further information on the building? perhaps any paintings or personal accounts?
I would really like to see what it would have looked like prior to its destruction.
