Can anyone tell me the relation between Sanskrit and Pashto?

They are both Indo-European languages. Pashto is in Indo-Iranian and Sanskrit is a Indo-Aryan subdivision of Indo-Iranian. Rather oddly, Sanskrit has similarities to Lithuanian, as they both have retained certain arcane, linguistical characteristics.

Pashto is a Indo-Afghan language, not a Indo-"Iranian" language. The world doesn't revolve around "Iranian". It's time Afghans get their history back.

That is what happens when you have non-Afghans, like encyclopedia Iranica and Wikipedia as your source for Afghan history.

I am not responsible for your peoples linguistical classification.

However if it's any consolation. Pashtuns and Tajikis are far more intact in a ethnic sence than Iranians. Whilst Afgans (at least for the most) part aren't related to the Persians or Greeks, who once ruled over the region. Pashto like Persian is derived from the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages.

I would precise Retro's answer. Pashto isn't Indo-Iranian language per se, but it belongs to Indo-Iranian group of languages.
I may like or dislike Iran, it's language etc (actually I don't like Persian language), but my personal likes or dislikes can't deny linguistic taxonomy or everything what has "Iranian" in its name

Well, I'm not narrow-minded and I would like to learn something new as well. I would appreciate if you could tell me something more about origins of Pashto language, if possible with references. Thank you.

I forgot to add something. I study Pashto language at university. One of my professors is a native Pashtun, dr of Pashto literature from Kabul University. He is one of my teachers who said about Indo-Iranian origins of Pashto language. So please don't say that only non-Afghan sources assign Pashto to Indo-Iranian group of languages.

Yes dear although I too greatly hate the fact that our tongue has been classified as "Indo-Iranian" cleaning this crap is a madness as we dealing with it. I once ask one of the well famous Pashtu literature professor who was my grandfather's (RIP) co-worker in university of Kabul. This elder speaks English like if he was born here, for those of you who know him all I would say is he is Mahmmadzai clan and lives in Canada. A great intellectual and bless of him, I visited him many times, but at last I once asked him "Why was Pashtu classified as Irani?" and he said that it was not known to them of how Englishmen classified us, but if we had our Government a little longer until 1980s and in the process of development as Daud Khan did assigned student to go to USA, UK in the big universities such as Univ-Oxford, Calif, etc to investigate as well learn abouts of how western linguistics classified languages of the world. The student were sent a year before his death. And after russia invasion non of them came as war started.

All I knew was Daud Khan was about to investigate the new word "Iranian" and he himself as nationalists was against his tongue being classified as BS so he was wonder why. According to him few articles were about to be published never did and its aim attacking western colonial linguistics specially those of UK which basically written 80% of the world's history, and everything steamed from them.

I asked him what can we do now, he said nothing we can do unless Afghanistan developed the Pashtu academy and publish researched and English articles as well as in respect with International research guideline and policies which has never been enforced as it was only Standardized by Daud Khan but again few months before his death, and never made its first international publication and appeal to investigate. It was a similar argument that was made by Raza Shah in his Days where he strictly demanded that the word "Tajik" shell never be used on his nation because they are not mixed, nor mongolistani but rather an Aryan nation. Which is why books from 1800-1930 all of them classified the Persians from Russian source as the British used socialist research data collected during 1700s during the Russian expansion.

Anyone shell research the word "Tajik" in respect to Iran they will discover that it was replaced with "Persian" because the Iranian Shah was smart in his argument to say "What the hell is this Tajik which you people published" this was direct and first attack to French publishing company which almost cost France and Iran to close their embassy and cut relationship. However during 1920s Raza Shah worked hard in making sure the Turkic persian speaker who were sunni maturity in Turkistan with Turkic features remain as "Turkistani" at the cost of Turks but be loyal to Persia. In the same sense of approving Russian research of 1700s that that native "Parss" or Tajiks were original natives and that after Mongolian who killed 15 million central Asian and from their women remains the origin of Persia and pride of Persia.

Hopefully in the future once the Pashtu academy develops once again although we have one branch in Peshawar which is very very weak, this mistake will be corrected as Iranian makes no sense to many languages combined together.

Nick - thank you for explanation. You didn't convince me but it's always nice to read arguments. I still think that this classification has been made by linguists and based on linguistic similarities.
Anyway, you have some arguments and this is what I like. I just don't understant blind, illogical hatred. I'm from Poland. As I know from our history we have always had some issues with Russia or Germany (in XVIII they even did partition of Poland and the country didnt exist for more than 100 years, or concentration camps during 2WW) . Does it mean I should hate all Russians or Germans?
Maybe I'm too narrow minded but I don't get what is the logic behind.
