  • pashtuns in ,,patna,,bihar india

    grano malgaro,
Patna or patana is a city in Bihar india where many people of pashtun origin lives. Many of them are the decendants of ,,suri,,pashtuns.
Some even say the city was named after great pashtun warrior fareed khan also known as sher shah suri (founder of the suri dynsty).
Somewhere i read that few pashtuns there still sing pashtu ,,charbaita,,in their wedings cermonies etc.
I am interested to know about that.

Patan/Pathan in the language of Patna meant: 'to root out, expel, annihilate' the pashtuns were called this because thats exactly what they did to the original inhabitants of Patna and the reason why there are people of Pashtun decent there, This was long before Sher Shah Suri.

The Nanda dynasty ruled Magadh in eastern India with Patna as its capital 350 BC. The name of the place then was Pataliputra. So Patna is very much a corruption of the original name. Dont think it has anything to do with Pathan/Pashtun.

Its true that Sher Shah Suri was from present day eastern UP and Bihar. If memory serves me right, his grave is in Sasaram, a small town in Bihar. Regarding Pashtun populations, the biggest (and genetically closest to present day Afghan Pashtuns) would be in Malihabad, eastern UP. The next closest population might be of the Rohilla Pashtuns in western UP around the town of Aligarh.

I live in Ahmedabad, India. Thousands of Pathans live in this city, most of them belong to Swat, Khyber, Pekhawar, Qandahar. Jalalabad, Kabul and other areas of Afghanistan. Most of us have lost our beloved Pukhto language but still some elders speak it. Therefore Pathan Cultural and social committee of Ahmadebad has published a book named "pushto zabaan hamari zabaan' for those Pathans who wants to learn it. It is been given to those Pathans who are registered under the committe, it's very useful book, i read it. Now committe is thinking to start Pashto teaching class in Ahmedabad, if it starts then i'll join it, because i also want to learn my ancestral language.

                  Mohsin, welcome.

is the Pashtun community treated fairly and equally?
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

I never heared this place name, it may be a small town. Most Pathans do not have contacts with their relatives of Pakistan or Afghanistan. We do not have also.
