its important that you speak pashto, because thats the main thing being a pashtun...Pashto langauge
I strongly agree with Master Khan. Because I know how pashto speaking pashtuns treat those pashtuns who have forgot pashtu. Their behaviour with such pashtuns is very humiliating.

Your first step if you want is learn the language! Check the section here, it is filled with great resources.
Are you sure pashtuns will accepte him even after learning pashto.
I dont think so. Knowing about your lineage and tribe has very much importance for Pashtuns. Language is not much important, because any body can learn a language. Even Hindus and Sikhs living in Pashtun areas can speak very good pashto.

Your right. But, I am sure that learning Pashto would be ideal if he wants to keep his Pashtun heritage alive.

Just knowing your tribe won't help, as not everyone lives where their tribes are present. So by learning Pashto you can pass it to your kids, which is keeping your heritage alive.

But why the pashtu speaking pashtuns treat non-pashtu speaking pashtuns as a third class human and humiliate them.

            thats not entirely true

In Pashtun society there are some human chacters which you dont have in other societies.

for example:if you have not attended a family members wedding they will be sad about it and since you are family they will ask you about it which is called Gila, they do Gila instead of not talking to you or staying angry at you.

so Gila is a form of knowing and somehow wanting you to make it good.

in another situation they will just not attend wedding of you family as well in retaliation.

so as you call it humiliating it might just be that they are pushing you to understand its good to know the language.

I personally have once seen two Pukhtane, one from Paktia and another from Jalalabad speaking in dari and i said what the hell are you guys talking in dari for,the guy from paktia said "it doesnt matter" i said well it does,i wont speak dari with you and you both speaking it is just stupid.

after that he never spoke dari but im sure he didnt feel disrespected.

                elaheebocus bro, some clarifications:

1 having stout mesomorphic body type will never be considered an indicator of pashtun ancestry!!!
2 your neka say they are pathan; this is the clear evidence of indian influence of your ancestors but not evidence of being a pashtun ancestry
3 the name elahi buksh or khan means you can be muslim from many countries - not evidence of pashtun ancestry

assuming ancestors came from afghanistan, migrated to india (some did), migrated to mauritius, (then tracing your family tree is almost impossible, like where will you find documents with list of migrants from british india?), the only link to pashtuns you have is an assertion of your nika (grand father)

in my opinion you can safely say you are a descendent of pashtun family settled in india, ie descendent of pathan.

as for being a pashtun in present sense, i would say No. in my opinion you need a current link to pashtun family, mother or father, nika, ana. ability to speak pashto bolsters your credentials on top of family connection.

I dont know how conclusive is DNA testing is to link you with certainty to an ethnic group. there are some PF members who display immense knowledge of genetics, genes evolution etc. [alchemist], might have the DNA answers for you.

-They have good heights and physique compared to indians. Generally they are brawny but new generations seems to be getting degenerated day by day. They are comparatively light skinned than indics. Some are very fair-skinned, some are moderately fair, some have wheatish skin, some have dark skin but a genuine pashtun can never be black skinned like negros....most of pashtuns have black/brown eyes, but some have also green eyes and brown (not blond) hair is common among them. As green eyes and brown hair is considered european trait so indic people particulary note this as they are obsessed with fair features. Facial features are unique (just search on google images). It is hard to differentiate between a sindhi and punjabi by look but a pashtun is instantly identified just by look....according to me the most distinguished characteristics of pashtuns is that they are fearless...are very hospitable compared to indic people.. Also they are simple and simple-minded...less morally corrupt...they are generally short-tempered and can be easily angered...and thinks of solving the matter with physical fight than verbal fight...and they give more honour and respect to women than indics...in lahore (punjab) and india you would observe that females would be standing in bus and males would be sitting and wont care about giving his seat to standing female passenger...in peshawer's buses females have separate corner and never in my life i have seen a female standing while males sitting. Rapes and gang rapes are very very rare in pashtun regions but in our neighbour punjab rapes, gang-rapes of women and throwing acid on their faces is routine phenomena.
