  • what is ,,,popal,,MEAN?

popalzai a sub-tribe of duranis or abdalis but what dose popal mean.
I discuss this with few people of history knowledge and some given a surprising answer. One man from afghanistan with good knowledge said,,popal is sinsekrat/hindi word and it is the name of flower in india.Farther he said that popal was a Hindo came from india to present day kandahar and his decendents are now ,,,popalzai,,.
I do not agree to this theory but what dose ,,popal,,,mean then?
It is the name of flower in SANSKRIT.Are the popalzais are of hindo origin.?

Popal is a shortcut version of Popalzai.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

    -Ferishta, 1560–1620

i know that rora.zai ,,,is not part of the name it is common for most pashtun tribes such as yousufzai, etc
Like sadozais are the decendents of sado khan so his name was sado khan not sadozai so popal is name and popalzais his decendents.Got my point thanks.
      was popal a hindo?

Most Indo Aryan languages are related to Sanskrit and I believe there are many words in current Pashtu and Dari that it's originally Sanskrit, if popal means a flower in Sanskrit then it doesnt mean that these people came from India!

The term Afghan also has connections with Sanskrit, does that mean we all came from India?
I would say the opposite since many from here moved to India in ancient times.

This is just speculation, but I think many of the major southern Pashtun tribes(Alekozai, Popalzai, Barakzai, etc) did not originate from one lineage, but were a confederation.

I have heard the statement that, for instance, Alekozai, is actually a corruption of Arokozi, or basically "People who reside in Arochoti", or ancient Kandahar. Popalzai could have been an ancient tribe that existed in Kandahar at the time and most likely under a different name.

Another tribe with also mysterious origins is the Kharot of the Ghaljai confederation.

Anthropologists in the 19th and 20th centuries claimed their mannerisms and dress were unique to other Ghaljay Afghans. I need to research this further.

In our lakki marwat , kharotis live as hamsayas in each village. We call them kharotiyan. I dont know much about them, marwats dont marry with them so i thought they were some low caste people but after some asking them they said that they are from afghanistan. Physically they are of medium height and are of darker skin tones than local marwats.

Oh wow I never knew Pakistan has Caste system like Hindustan? I hope my fellow Kharotiyan aren't treated like how white people treat minorities in America.

How long have they been in Marwat?

Kharot's are pretty dark, but alot of Pashtuns from those areas are. Not Bengali dark.
