    Mullah Powindah

    Mullah Powindah
Mullah Powindah ( his real name was Mohiuddin Mahsud) (died 1913) was a religious leader of the Mahsuds tribe. Mullah Powindah led a long standing guerilla insurgency against the British forces in the late 19th century.
He was a mahsood mullah and belonged to SHABI KHEL section of the ALIZAI branch. He waswell known in the Bannu District, when he used to wander about as a ''talib-ilm''. In 1886-87 he was suspected of complicity in the case of the murder of ALLAH DAD KHAN, Darogha ofthe Bannu Jail, by two 'talib ilms''. He then took to the hills and became an outlaw. He at first took refuge in Lower DAUR and assumed the title of ''BADSHAH-I-TALIBAN'' or the head of the 'talibs''. Shortly after this he became a ''murid'' of the well known mullah GULAB DIN, who had then also taken up his residence in DAUR, not far away. While GULAB DIN was alive ,Mullah POWINDAH'S name was little known, and he has only come into some prominence since GULAB DIN'S death. He led the attack on the British Delimitation Commission at wana in November 1804. Only a few months before this attack he had moved into the mahsood area and settled down at DOTOI near MAKIN.
Mullah Powindah used the Tochi Valley as his centre of operations and incited people from the area to revolt in Jihad against the British. He became known first as the Selani Mullah and later as Mullah Powindah rather than by his rarely used real name of Mohiuddin. He was not a scholar in real terms but was familiar with the main tenets of Islam, and due to his closeness with the clergy came to be known as a Mullah. He was a revolutionary National leader and even the staunchest and most unwilling Wazir and Mahsud tribesmen supported him and united on his call.
Mullah Powindah did Bai'ath from Mullah Muhammad Anwar of Tirah under the Qadiriyyah Tarikah. His teacher was Maulana Hamzullah Wazir who also was a prominent mujahed of his time. Along with religious teachings, Mullah Powindah also received military training from Maulana Hamzullah Wazir.
    Clash with the British
The British did not like his increasing popularity. They were already aware of the resistance from the Wazirs. In 1894 2000 Wazir and Mahsud youth had rioted against the British Cantonment, and the British losses at the hand of these Mujahideen in Wana were still fresh in their minds. After this incident, a Mr. Baros was named the Political Agent to the agency. He had already played a major role in the success of the Sandeman policy in Balochistan. However, Baros knew it would be difficult to handle the tribes. Unlike Balochistan; where sardars wield the power, Wazir tribes had power in the Jirga; where every single youth was an important member. As soon as Baros was appointed, a group of 5 Wazirs assassinated the British officer in charge of the constructions and communications department. Baros pressured the Maliks to bring forward the accused in a Jirga and punish them. The Mahsud tribe yielded under pressure and brought forward the five accused. They were each given seven years imprisonment.

When Mullah Powindah learned of this, he understood it as an act of subjugation to the British. He announced that no one was to carry out this punishment. At this, the public surrounded the abodes of each of the Maliks who had announced the punishment. Three of them were executed for treason and the other two vanished fearing their lives. Along with this, Mullah Powindah also sent a letter to the political agent Mr. Baros through his trusted nephew Mullah Abdul Hakeem. In the letter he told the Political Agent to release the five tribesmen. At the time of receiving the letter. Mr. Baros was again planning to recapture areas outside Wana. In the same letter Mullah Powindah also told him to stay clear of Wana.
As expected, Baros did not pay much attention to these warnings and sent an abuse riddled reply to Mullah Powindah. After the failure of these peace talks, Mullah Powindah decided to teach the British Political Agent a lesson. Early morning on the 2nd of November 1894, the British officers were still asleep in the Wana cantonment. Suddenly, a Lashkar of Mujahideen made a surprise attack. Such was the ferocity and quickness of the strike that the British forces couldn’t make proper decisions on how to react. According to the Pioneer (published from Allahabad, India), the number of Mujahideen was around 1000. It described in detail the event, how the drumming, shouting and firing Mujahideen caught the British by surprise. The article reported the deaths of at least 100 British officers and common soldiers, with at least twice that number injured. As soon as they attacked, the Mujahideen retreated back to their mountain strongholds with the same swiftness. General Turner and Major O'Neil sent soldiers in pursuit of the retreating party but they came back empty handed. Almost immediately, another army was assembled, its command given to Sir William Lockhart, and then sent to Waziristan. By November, cantonments in Waziristan were filled with troops under the British.

General Lockhart gave the Mullahs and other leaders a time frame of one month in which to submit an apology. But throughout the time nobody said anything or did anything. On 14 December, the army spread out hoping to encounter the rebels and teach them a lesson. They proceeded from Wana to Kaniguram, Jandola to Makeen and from Bannu to Razmak. Winter had started and snow began to fall. Ice cold winds started to blow. The soldiers who had come from hot areas of India to these highlands were not used to the cold. The Mahsud and Wazirs played a patient waiting game. They did not confront the incoming armies, but followed the time-honored strategy of almost all Pashtun tribes which allows their enemies in and then unleash a fierce counterattack. However in this case the British faced no resistance. On 9 January the British forces retreated back to the same positions from which they had started.

On 21 January 1895 the British approached the tribesmen for peace talks and proposed the following demands:
    • The Tribesmen return all the loot and war booty
    • Mullah Powindah not be allowed to enter any area of Waziristan
50 Rifles, 200 Guns, 2 Swords and 1200 Rupees be given to the British as a fine for the crimes they have committed
During negotiations, the tribesmen agreed to the demands but none of them were ever fulfilled. During the late 1890s Powindah may have carried out small raids on the British; these may have stopped after he met with the local Political Agent in 1900. He publicly refused the usual allownce given a tribal leader by the imperial government, insisting that his tribe's concerns be addressed. However he may have received larger sums without publicity. He remained a concern of the Raj until his death.

Qadiriyyah Sufi Tariqa is based on the teachings of Abdul Qader Jilani. An ancient Muslim scholar and an orthodox Sufi of a kind you don't see often today.

One of the most famous students of Abdul Qader Jilani was, Sheikhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah.

Although ABdul Qader Jilani was a great scholar, he did have some flaws in his practices. But overall, he was not like the later followers or the modern Qaaderis like Taher ul Padri of Pakistan or Sayyid Pir Jilani of Afghanistan.

Sufi Tariqa's have come to existence when some prominent Muslim scholars such as Muhammad Al Ghazali developed a new ideology which simply stated, claims that Prophet Muhammad did not teach Muslims Islam properly, and he did not reveal how Muslims can come in touch with Allah. And therefore for MUslims there are only two ways of achieving this goal. One is to practice philosphy. Like Ibn Sina and Al Ghazali did. Or to become a recluse and meditate.

Some Muslim scholars who adapted this new ideology evolved in to movements. And these pioneers of what was now called Sufism, developed their own methods of meditation or their own philosophy on what Allah is like, and where he is and what his attributes are. Their followers were then called, followers of the tariqah. And each of these pioneers has his own Tariqah. There are 3 major Sufi Tariqah's with different divisions and variety. There are the Naqshbandis who are the most extreme heretics of all. Their leader was from Naqshband, Central Asia. There is the Qaderi Sufi Tariqah that is slightly moderate compared to Naqshbandis. Qaderiyyah established itself in Middle East. And there is Chisti Sufi Tariqah. Chistiyyah was established in Chist-e-Sharif near Herat, Afghanistan.

Sadly, because of their beliefs and ideologies, they ended up deviating from original beliefs and practices of Islam as defined in the Qur'an and implemented by the prophet Muhammad and his companions.

The result of these new development was that many groups came to existence with very disturbing practices.

Not all followers of these Tariqah's are equally bad in their practices. There are many moderate Sufis who do not participate in heresies like others.

Therefore, not all Sufis are bad.

The Sufis of Waziristan, as far as I know are rather orthodox in their practices. The book which I read describing the life of Mullah Hamzullah and Mullah Powinda describe them as strong adherants of Sunnah. This implies they were not heretics and clowns like Taher ul Qaderi.

Therefore we must not confuse them with same type of Qadiryyah we see now on youtube practices by Taher ul Qadri and his likes.

Mullah Powinda is for Afghans what Mad Mullah Hassan was was for Somalis back in the days.

Ever since I learned about the history of Mullah Powinda, I have started to develop a deep rooted hatred for king Amanullah Khan's regime and his fake title as Ghazi.

TOday Afghans revere Amanullah Khan as our national hero who gave us independence. Nothing is further form the truth.

If we have independence, then it is thanks to Mullah Hamzullah and Mullah Powanda. They struck fear into the garissons of British Empire.

A Book the describes the horrors these two men were responsible for is titled Walk Warily in Waziristan.

It's a shame we don't have leaders like that anymore.

Another Pashtun hero form Waziristan is the Faqir of Ipi, who was the most sought person in British India. He was also the first President of Interim Assembly of Pashtunistan.

The struggle of the Pashtun nation against the British is a glorious chapter in the history of Pashtuns. Unfortunately, the past and present generations of Pashtuns rever Arab imperialist like Bin Cassim and Pro-British indian stooges like Sir Syed, Jinnah and Iqbal.

Thanks but no thanks. I have nothing to do with the 'Islami Bhai Chaara' of Mutaliya ye Pakistan. You should have thought of that before you imprisoned Baacha Khan and killed 3m in Bengal, thousands of Balochs and thousands of Pashtun Moslems.

Oh no! We have a Marxist on our hand.

Tell me, why did Marx's wife remain to use her title as a nobility? And why did your prophet, Marx have a maid in his house at 28 Dean Street in Soho who he made pregnant?

And why did Marx trade in London stock exchange?

And why did his buddy, Engels work for his fathers Capitalist business?

Arab countries have lost all credibility as Muslim nations. They are governed by dictators, tyrants and stooges of the Jews and Americans.

Even the prophet Muhammad (saw) prophesied that near the end of times, the army that will revive Islam will come from Khurasan.

Today, most Arab leaders are very far from Islam. Egyptian l Azhar university is a tool of Israeli foreign policy. Al Azhar scholars issue fatwa's in favor of Israel.

The Saudi universities are dominated by people who are occupied with internal conflicts and political rifts. They are silent about the crimes and atrocities of Saudi government, the UAE and other Arab nations.

The reason why most Arabs finance Taliban and the reason why according to Richard Holbrooke billions of dollars are annually pumped into Afghanistan by Muslims from the Arabian peninsula, is because Arabs have lost all hope in their own elite and establishment. They support Taliban they don't see any other political movement in Islamic world that dares to question the Judo-American hegemony.

The Arab world has lost all hope. Their Arab nationalism has lost its last leader, Saddam Hussain. All of their Arab Nationalist leaders like Anwar Saddat, Jamal Abdul Naser and Saddam Hussain are ancient history. They don't have leadership, ideology or zeal to revive their ancient glory.

All is left, is a few countries where a hypocrite culture dominates where people are dressed as Muslims but drink and smoke and import cheap prostitutes from former Soviet republics.

They have nothing to offer. They are so badly educated, the richest countries in the middle east cannot even produce a single engineer. All of their workers are migrants and ex-pats.

And very soon, the oil fields will run dry. And as soon as that happens, the whole of middle east will become the same dump that it was before the beginning of the 20th century.

I would like to disagree with you there on one point, Arabs do not financen taliban on the grounds of being neglected, Arabs have a interest in Afghanistan and this is why they support taliban, I think you should look at your comment again, because those Arabs who are fighting with Taliban are not mentally stable and neither have they done anything good for anybody besides bringing this beheading culture upon us.

I agree with the other points you rise, but to say Taliban bring the true islamic justice without outsiders interests is incorrect.

That is like saying ISI supports Taliban to bring Islam into Afg but however they want a strategic depth and a governmetn friendly to Afghanistan to keep pashtuns at bay.
